Wonder how Bettman feels about this? Or Fehr for that matter. Bet they will be having some umm, interesting conversations about this signing (and i'm sure there will be many more of these types of signings going forward too). This is exactly the kind of contracts that the owners were apparently willing to 'die on the hill' for to stop players from getting...i dont know about the rest of you, but my BS detectors are going off right about now. Just shaking my head at these morons running the teams, its unbelievable...i dont even know how the league is going to make it to the end of this contract to tell the truth, i'm looking forward to half the league being AHL calibre just in order to make the salary cap.

As I said before, if Zajac could return to being the 60+ point selke caliber center then even this contract is not that bad. But at 44-50 points it is a different matter. Still given everything else he brings to the table, Zajac at 44-50 points might well be worth $4.5-5M.

In my mind he sits somewhere between Mike Fisher and Mikko Koivu. Fisher signed for $4.2 when the cap was at $56M.

The big risk to me is the term. I'd like this deal a lot more if it was for 3-4 years.

NJD doesn't have a good top-line. They have a good top-line player. They don't have a real good top-six. Zajac coming off a bad injury and a 44 point, 82 game season.

This is like giving Horcoff his contract after 09/10 instead of after ~170 points in ~200 games from 05/06 to 07/08. Even Horcoff's 06 playoff run was better than Zajac's 12 run.

Awful cap-hit at an awful term.

I don't understand why SJ traded Mashinter. He cleared waivers so why not keep him in the minors until you need him?

Is he just that overrated or did Wilson just throw this kid a bone?

Given what the Rangers gave up this would have been a solid deal for the Oiler to get in on. They could use that kind of help on the farm.

Starting to think the kid is useless. I mean you had to take a body back just to move him. Why wouldn't the Sharks keep him for their affiliate?

San Jose gave him a qualifying offer and then resigned him. That suggests that they thought he might have value. This could very well be the Sharks simply agreeing to give him a chance somewhere else.

He is a big big guy who will hit and he has some offensive ability. He did score 34 goals as an over-ager in the OHL and has broken the 20 goal mark in the AHL. He'll be a career minor leaguer, but I think he is guy that could have helped the Barons this year.

Tim Connonly going on waivers.

Honestly, if he doesn't get picked up I could see the Leafs eating 500k-1mil and him being quite attractive. He did have 36 points last year and has been half ass healthy the past 3 years.

Bob Stauffer ‏@Bob_Stauffer

If the Oilers opt for an off-ice work-out only tomorrow you may see roster movement sooner rather than later.

Edmonton Oilers ‏@EdmontonOilers

#Oilers are having off-ice workouts this morning, no practice. Thanks to all fans who came to Rexall Place this week to cheer us on!

A few people responded to him asking whether that meant a trade or players getting sent down but he didn't say anything. The way it is worded though I would assume it means players getting sent down and finalizing the roster.

Bench warmer? No room for that role.

I know conventional wisdom would say he's due to rebound after such a horrid season...but I'm not exactly counting on that.

I just assumed he meant guys going to OKC, as they play tomorrow. And it's 2 buck beer and 1 buck hotdogs.

Sure, if you expect him to put points up but that wasn't why he was brought in.

I expect consistent play, strong effort and some leadership. He brought none of those last year.

That's what I assumed as well, only makes sense. Just thought I would throw it out there though.

Better to have a bench warmer than a permanent IR nightmare. I also think belanger will have a bounce back year. He was absolutely horrendous last year. Though I could see him being traded to a team weak up the middle. I mean the guy has averaged around 35 points every season except last one. That should be good enough for any third line role.

Belanger was brought in to kill penalties and win faceoffs. He did both of those incredibly well, and was probably one of (if not the) biggest reason for the improvement of the PK from the previous season. He was also incredibly consistent in his game with the exception of his offensive production. He wasn't brought in to be a captain of the team despite his experience in the NHL. I don't think he's worn a letter or been in much of a leadership role anywhere he's played, so I'm not sure why you would've expected leadership to be one of his major roles on this team.

I like Connolly for depth down the middle, which this team could use. He also brings some skill, so he could fill-in the top-6 in a pinch.

Maybe this is what EDM-TOR rumored discussions were based around..
They probably just waived Connolly after Tambo requested a month to evaluate the proposal..

I think we will see MPS and Lander and maybe someone else heading to the farm today

I would bring Connolly in and have him compete with Horcoff for the 3C spot. If he's better than Horcoff then I would get rid of Horcoff. If Connolly ever got injured we could put Belanger in his spot and have Vandevelde/Lander on the 4th line

Lander was never up.
We have to get under the 23 roster limit soon so thy'll probably just make all the cut today..

Teubert, VV and Fedun would go down for sure.. Paajarvi would be the other unless we waive Peckham or find a way to send him down to OKC on a conditioning stint.

Is it just me or does Connolly sound like a better option than horcoff? How many years are left on his contract and what's the hit? Is he worth taking a flyer on?
