The Philadelphia Flyers will open training camp later today with a roster of 26 players – 16 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. On-ice practices begin today at The Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ at 11 AM, and are free and open to the public.

Practices will continue throughout the week, including an open-to-the-public practice at the Wells Fargo Center at 6pm on Thursday, January 17.

Injury report through January 13:

Danny Briere
Quote:
His left wrist, injured Dec. 29 while he was playing in Germany during the NHL lockout, seems to be healing quickly, even though an MRI on Monday showed that he was recovering from a hairline fracture, not a bone bruise and sprain, which is what he and the Flyers had been calling it.

No matter, Briere returning to the ice and feeling fine testing his wrist in simple hockey drills made it a good day in itself, and staying out there to do a few drills with practicing teammates made it even better.

“How close am I? I don’t know yet,” Briere said. “The doctor said that it didn't look like there was much ligament or muscle damage, which is sometimes a lot worse. So that seems to be very good. It just needs time to heal completely. I didn’t have any problems with stick-handling, didn’t have problems with deflecting pucks, even receiving passes, which I was surprised with. The vibration off of it, that didn’t bother me.

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. – There was good news to report on Danny Briere’s wrist injury Monday, according to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren ... sort of.

Briere is “healing” from the injury he sustained to his left wrist while playing in Germany in December. But, Holmgren admitted, the veteran forward had incurred a hairline fracture.

Previously, the injury had been considered just a sprain or, at worst, a bone bruise.

“The news on Danny today was somewhat positive,” Holmgren said. “The injury showed it’s a little further along in a good way than what we had initially anticipated. We’ll see how he is tomorrow and the next day. It probably changes at least my thoughts about him being out an extended period of time. It might not be as long as we initially thought.”

That said, Briere is likely out for at least the Flyers’ first two games. His chances of being ready to go for Saturday’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins are “iffy,” said Holmgren, who also said the Flyers had been aware that the injury was a fracture for some time.

Marc-Andre Bourdon

Quote:
Holmgren said...there is no timetable for Marc-Andre Bourdon (concussion).
Source: Sam Carchidi, January 13-14

Quote:
has post-concussion syndrome.

Quote:
Marc-Andre Bourdon has been scratched with an "illness" since waking up not feeling well on Dec. 1. He has been down in Philadelphia also seeing the Flyers doctors for the past week.

Holmgren said Bourdon is being treated for "concussion symptoms" and is seeing a neuropsychologist in addition to the team doctors.

Claude Giroux

Quote:
Homer said if season started Jan. 19, Claude Giroux would be in lineup. "He's fine," he said.

Erik Gustafsson

Quote:
Homer says Gustafsson is two weeks away from being able to play.
Source: Sam Carchidi, January 13

Quote:
Do not look for young defenseman Erik Gustafsson to immediate compete for a spot on the Flyers' starting blueline. The player, who has an injury variously described as either a high ankle issue and/or a foot bone bruise, suffered a setback late last week after returning to practice for two days.

According to a report in the Saratogian, Gustafsson is now back to walking on crutches. He was scheduled to be examined this week by Flyers team doctors.

Ben Holmstrom
Quote:
Per Paul Holmgren, Ben Holmstrom had ACL reconstruction of right knee performed by Dr. Deluca. Recovery time is 4-6 months.
Source: The official Twitter page of the Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Club, late December 2012.

Quote:
Ben Holmstrom had surgery on his right knee on Thursday afternoon to repair damage to the cartilage and determine damage to the ACL. The ligament was about 90 percent torn, according to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

Dr. Peter DeLuca at Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia reconstructed the ACL and Holmstrom will be out four to six months to recover. This is the second time Holmstrom has torn the right ACL; the first was at age 17.

Holmstrom felt something in his knee while dumping the puck into offensive zone during the second period on Dec. 8, a 4-3 shootout win over Syracuse. He went down to Philadelphia to see the Flyers team doctors five days later, but had to wait until Thursday for the swelling to go down to have the surgery.

Andreas Lilja

Quote:
In addition, the work stoppage has helped Andreas Lilja, a depth defenseman who will battle for a third-pairing spot, recover from hip surgery. Lilja has been cleared to play.
Source: Sam Carchidi, January 7 ( http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...n_to_heal.html )

Andrej Meszaros

Quote:
There are indications that Meszaros, coming off Achilles ligament surgery, will be ready for Saturday’s 3 p.m. opener against visiting Pittsburgh.
Source: Sam Carchidi, January 16

Quote:
Defenseman Andrej Meszaros' health will play a major role in how the Flyers start the shortened season.

A doctor on Monday cleared Meszaros for full activity, general manager Paul Holmgren said.

"We'll see how he does once practices start," Holmgren said when asked if he expected Meszaros to start the season.

Meszaros had surgery on his right Achilles tendon in the offseason. He has made major strides, but said he sometimes has problems pushing off. "It's a matter of time before I get my strength back," he said after an informal practice Monday in Voorhees.

Quote:
Meszaros is recovering from a torn right Achilles tendon suffered last summer, and subsequent surgery.

Could he play right now?

“I don’t know,” Meszaros said after a player scrimmage Monday. “It’s tough to say. I really didn’t have a full practice with everything. Or a scrimmage.

“The speed of the game … it’s a great tempo but it’s not – I have to try it. Once we start practicing with the whole team and do scrimmages, then I can actually say whether I can. I can’t really tell right now.”

Chris Pronger

Quote:
Pronger will be in town today and see a doc. He has been doing some video scouting.
Source: Sam Carchidi, January 13

Quote:
Philadelphia Flyers captain Chris Pronger will join his team at training camp, although he will not participate in on-ice activities due to the fact he has not been cleared by doctors to play hockey.

Pronger, 38, has not played since November 2011 due to post-concussion syndrome and it is unclear if the former Hart and Norris Trophy winner will ever play in the National Hockey League again. Indications are that it's unlikely he will ever return to the ice.

There is still five years remaining on Pronger's contract with a salary cap hit of over $4.9 million each season.

Quote:
Chris Pronger has been living in St. Louis the last several weeks...experienced good and bad days..still not fully over concussion
Source: Andy Strickland, January 6 ( https://twitter.com/andystrickland)

Tom Sestito

Quote:
“All gone,” Sestito said. “Just my luck. I lost a lot of weight. It was very painful, some days I couldn’t move. A lot of what I lost was muscle, so I can get that back.”

Sestito, 25, played 14 games with the Flyers last season. He’s a beast of a man - checking in at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds - and he’s competing with Scott Laughton, Eric Wellwood, Tye McGinn and Zac Rinaldo for the two final spots on the roster when training camp opens on Sunday.

There is no treatment for the mumps, other than a medical steroid to help soothe the swelling. The virus has to run its course - and it never totally leaves your body.

“I still don’t feel totally right, but you’re only contagious for 12 days. We’re well past that,” Sestito said. “I’m looking forward to getting back on the ice. I’m ready to get back into things. Safe to say, though, that I'm not going to be spending my vacation dollars to go back to England.”
Source: Frank Seravalli, January 11 ( http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/f...mps-virus.html )

Kimmo Timonen

Quote:
Timonen had offseason back surgery. Since he's been with the Flyers, Timonen has suffered numerous injuries, from a blood clot in his ankle to a hip flexor. He is thought to have finished last season with a knee injury.

There was some thought that Timonen might be aided by more time to rest from hip surgery, to let his body fully heal. Instead, Timonen views a condensed season as a threat to his longevity, since an 82-game slate would have had at least a few breaks in between.

"After back surgery, I'm sure [time off] helped," Timonen said. "But it's going to be 48 or 50 games in 95 days. It might be tougher, actually. We'll see once we get into it and play a few games, but I feel pretty good right now."

Laughton will be wearing number 21 in camp and Foster number 3 in case anyone was wondering.

So, he has a "real" number too.

I see Rinaldo keeps his fringe-player number.

Unless he blows up, I think its showing that Laughton will 100% be on the opening day roster with Briere hurt.

Flyers are pushing Laughton on their twitter feed. I think it's a given he makes the team out of camp. We'll see what happens when Briere's return is nigh

You could just go like this:

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Schenn-Couturier-Briere
Simmonds-Laughton-Read
Feds-Talbot-Rinaldo/Sestito/Wellwood/McGinn

It was actually interesting seeing Schenn on Giroux's wing during practice.
