Honestly... I'm all for dealing Gunnar. Sure, I like his overall game, but he doesn't do any one thing very well, and if Dion is going to eat minutes with Kostka then we can afford to lose Gunnar.

Yes, but maybe you could get him to include someone like Shore?

Their forwards aren't going anywhere for a long time, so maybe they'd move a prospect in the deal.

Vaive and Ludzik on collapse, and Phaneuf.

Or Toffoli... centre, great numbers in his first AHL season, looks ready to take the next step next year.

Kostka's 2 NHL games aren't really that meaningful, unless you think Winnik will be top 10 in scoring this year.

It is inevitable at this point that Cody Franson will be traded. Regardless of performance he has been in and out of the line-up. Franson is a big body, plays pretty well at both ends of the ice, relatively young and is a welcomed addition to most #2 PP units with his shot. At this point he is a 4-6 defensemen but does carry some upside. Look for him to be swapped for either a similar forward of the same stature or prospects/picks.

I wouldn't say that. Gunnarson could just as easily be moved IMO.

I disagree, I think it's an oversight .. It's way too risky to rely on a player who, at 27, just played his first couple of games in the NHL to trade some of that depth away

I agree, Gunnar doesn't wow you in one facet of his game but generally speaking he's a solid two way defenceman that's arguably been the steadiest in the past couple seasons... Additionally he's effectively able to play alongside Phaneuf, giving Carlyle flexibility in the defense pairings (we don't know how Kostka would look paired up with someone else). Throw in the fact that he's on a great contract right now, I think it's a bad idea to give him up.

Franson and Komi are the two defensemen I'd ideally trade first .. With Liles, Gards, Phaneuf, there is plenty of offense from the back end .. And Holzer should be able to fill Komiserek's role as a stay at home physical defender for half the price. I liked Fraser's game the other night, I think he makes a good 7th defenseman to fill in when the line up needs an injection of toughness or in case of an injury.

See, this mentality I can't wrap my head around. He doesn't hit, he doesn't fight, he doesn't clear the front of the net, he doesn't intimidate. He isn't anywhere near as tough as the true defensive defensemen are on contending teams.

Just because he still gets by despite not being terribly fast or slow, terribly physical or overly wet-noodly, have a fantastic or a pathetic shot, etc... you get the idea. I like Gunnar, he serves a role as a 2nd pairing guy, but the man crushing on him has got to stop. He's easily replaceable by Holzer, who is, also, a 'defensive' defenseman, and at the expense of what, 10 to 15 points a season and the same if not better, and certainly grittier, defensive zone coverage play?

If we can leverage our depth at D and package Gunnar and a forward up and swap them for a player we need much, much more, like a top 6 PWF, a #1C upgrade over Bozak, or a legit #1 tender, I would drive them both to the airport myself. We'd be silly not to.

I know it's early, but Phaneuf, Kostka, Komisarek and debatably Liles all look better than Gunnar so far.

No way I'd put Kadri in this deal. Matt Duchen intrigues me though.

Would anybody be willing to trade Grabovski+ for a first line centre? I've always thought Kadri would eventually be a similar/better choice for our #2C and that gives us an established #2C as our trading chip.

Not basing this on the first few games, and maybe we should wait longer to see how Kadri does, but I think it could give us the best possible line-up if we made a trade like:

Grabovski +MacA? or Gunner? or Frattin? (or whatever makes it fair) for Krejci
I think Krejci would complement our first line well...

or

Grabovski + Gardiner for legit #1C (Not sure who's available/worth this)

Giving us a line-up of:

Lupul - Krejci - Kessel (Replace Krejci with #1C if 2nd deal)
JVR - Kadri - MacA/Frattin
Komarov - McClement - Kulemin (Shut-down)
Brown - Steckel - Orr

Agree? Disagree?

Edit: Colbourne could be tried at #3C if that's preferable (I just like the idea of a Komarov - McClement - Kulemin line)

Gunnarson was downright awful on Monday. One of the worst players on the ice.

He's not our best defensive defenseman. What he is, over the last 2 seasons, is the most reliable, or consistently not bad defenseman.

This, it's important to distinguish good from not bad. It's hard to tell with Leaf D unfortunately.

I've liked holzer a lot. Phaneuf has been bad, every time he pivots I hold my breath. Slow bad skater. When Gardiner is back hell have the #1 spot he's ready.

I think Phaneuf has been fantastic. Kostka has certainly surprised me. I hope he keeps it up.
