Difference here is that Galchenyuk will be playing top 6, while Rielly probably wouldn't play over any of the guys in the top 4.

Rielly needs the minutes to develop and continue to grow as a player. Doesn't look like he dominated or impressed to knock a player off from the top 4.

He'll probably get a much longer look next season.

Interesting D-pairings today: Phaneuf-Kostka. Liles-Komisarek. Gunnarsson-Franson. Fraser and Holzer would appear extras.
Interesting to see Kostka on the top defence line. He must have really impressed Carlyle with the Marlies and training camp.

Leafs didn't require waivers to demote Frattin and Rielly and in the end that factored in their return to Marlies/WHL.

Mike Ulmer ‏@mulmer

Defence: Gunner-Phaneuf, Lyles-Kostka, Fraser-Fransen with Komisarek hanging around.

Kostka* - Phaneuf
Gunnar - Franson
Liles - Komisarek

* - placeholding for Gardiner
Those are interesting pairings, I'm not concerned with how they will play in MTL, or even against Buffalo, but I wonder how they will stack against the penguins on wednesday.

Better without Komisarek.

The pairings seem to constantly be changing. I'm watching the practice on LeafsTV and there doesn't seem to be any set pairings. Although there has been a lot of Kostka and Phaneuf.

Would be nice if Ulmer could spell Franson's name correctly..little things like that piss me off. Doesn't take much effort.

As per TML

I would prefer

Gardiner(Kostka)/Phaneuf
Liles/ Fraser
Gunnarson/Franson

Holzer

and go from there

Liles-Komisarek? That would be terrible. Fraser on the team? Even Kostka on the first unit? I doubt these are the pairings for the first game. I hope.

Can't believe Orr made the team. I know he slimmed down, and redefined himself but still. How effective can he be?

I wonder when Gardiner is ready, if they will put Komisarek on waivers and buy him out.

He has a no movement claus. But amnesty buyout might be better in the summer. He can stick around as injury reserve D.

Hopefully Kostka is randomly the Jose Bautista of the Maple Leafs.

From everything I've heard he could very well make this team with Gardiner out. Another story completely when he comes back though.

Orr over Frattin? Seriously?

I'm not a qualified coach by any means, but that doesn't seem like the right move for a club supposedly going with a youth movement and using this shortened season to develop players.

If either Kostka or Fraser is sent down, they would have to pass through waivers and would likely be claimed but Komisarek would just be the Amnesty buyout.

They weren't competing for the same role. Frattin can play every day with the Marlies rather than spending time in the press box and on the 4th line for the Leafs.

I liked Frattin's game with the Marlies last year but they need a little sandpaper on the roster. Seems that Orr has made the adjustment to the new NHL ... for now.
