Former Flame and NHL veteran Steve Bégin will attend the Calgary Flames training camp on a professional tryout contract.

The Trois-Rivieres, QC product missed the entire 2011-12 season due to hip surgery but has fully recovered and is ready to get back into the game.

"Everybody thought I was done," he said. "But I love the game so much that I wanted to make a comeback.

When new Flames head coach Bob Hartley was notified the forward had fully recovered from surgery, he felt Bégin would be the perfect addition to the squad's training camp roster.

"He asked around (about my hip) and he talked to me so that's how we got everything done," Bégin said of the process behind the contract. "I'm so happy I have this opportunity with this team."

I always liked the way Begin played, I'm rooting for him to get back into the NHL.

Makarov was originally reported as going to Florida's camp. However, he is no longer attending, as he is attending Buffalo's Instead.

Someone needs to give former Oil King Rhett Rachinski a tryout. The kid's got a ton of heart. He could impress. He was absolute clutch in the WHL playoffs.

in the report for confirming him attending Buffalo's camp it states he went to the rookies camp for Florida but could not come to terms on a contract.

So its not that he did not go, he went, just to the rookies camp only

Yes. Hartley said he would be at main camp if not for the lockout. McCarthy played for Hartley in Zurich last season.

When the lockout is done this thread will heat up again. There will still need to be camps even if there aren't any preseason games.

Yep. And he's still only 31. Might be able to crack the Flames in a 6/7 role, or at the very least as an AHL call-up.

Begin and McCarthy are both Hartley's invitees.

Raman Hrabarenka actually was a tryout for Albany and made the squad, so you can take him off of the Devils list, not like it really matters though.

It's probably a little early but are there going to be a lot of tryout invitations this time around?

My hunch is that there won't be too many but there still seem to be a lot of free agents around.
