You can have Connolly for a pick if you want but we don't want Lou. There are young net minders out there not on a ruinous contract.

Sucks that it was Nonis that stuck you guys with that contract though.

I like the fact that Nonis is making room to give our younger players an opportunity to showcase what they can do at the NHL level for a longer period of time. Short-term we will most likely struggle, but I'm glad Nonis is committed for the long-term success of this franchise. We do need a tender but I'd rather do that search in June/July.

Leafs are just adjusting to a realistic approach, rather than the I can do it faster than everyone else approach that was just flushed down the toilet.

I'm hoping they are going to build the foundation before they bring in the final touches. Luongo would be a nice piece, but not if you have to take some bricks out of the foundation to pay for it.

I've always been a big Nonis fan. I loved what he had to say about his work in Vancouver prior to joining the Leafs organization, or more specifically what he didn't do that ultimately cost him his job. That's the kind of guy I want running my team.

Also Leaf moderators are too kind around these parts. You'll get banned from a thread for far less at the Vancouver board, for example.

I agree,

I just find it odd sometimes at how excited people are when they talk about the goaltending "this" year.

We are stronger characters here and don't have to run and tell mommy every time someone walks down the sidewalk.

Finally. I gladly "suffer" through some years of watching young talented players develop and grow as a team. This is the approach we should have had from day 1 after the last lock out.

I thought that interview revealed a lot about the motivation behind Burke's firing. If both Nonis and ownership are of the same mindset that youth should not be sacrificed for short-term gain, then one can reasonably conclude that Cope et al. were concerned that Burke was willing to make such a sacrifice to get Luongo. As such, they took pre-emptive action by firing Burke before such deal could be made. This makes me much happier....much, much happier.

I also predict Nonis will land at least 1 big fish (UFA signing) this summer - something burke woudn't do.
You realize Burke set everything up to both build his pool and be able to take advantage of UFA at the same time, right? People continually say TO can't land UFA but ignore that we didn't make big pitches...for a reason.

I don't get the clapping, It's like you are saying "YES! we got the worst goaltending tandem in the nhl!".

If the leafs don't go after luongo, they better as hell go after somebody else, because they have little chance making any playoffs with the current goalies.

I am trying hard to understand some people on here, As a fan of both the canucks (mostly) and the leafs (love the young talent), It really does make my mind boggle when I notice how happy people are with the goaltending situation they have.

flame away
Because this franchise hasn't gone through a proper rebuild, we've kept our first round picks a couple of years and then traded one, kept one, traded one.. it's been up and down and side ways moves. Nonis has a clear path from this article, no trading first rounders or young players for vets, only young players for young players. I also love the fact that he understands he doesn't need to pamper the fan base with being patient. He knows what we've been through, we're the most patient fan base in the world. Nonis is going to do great things here.

It also speaks volumes about where ownership sits. To the contrary of what everyone thinks, ownership is not forcing Nonis to make the playoffs. Sounds like Nonis and everyone is on the same page.

Let's hope, yeah.

I'll suffer a few more years of not making the playoffs if it means stock-piling high draft talent.

We're on the right path, as everyone knows we need a goalie, I'm sure if the price was lower from Gillis Luongo would be here.

The foundation, in my mind, is not yet set at all. That's why Burke could have set us back significantly if he gave up prospects and picks for Luongo. This team is better than the one that Burke inherited, sure, but not yet one that will ensure a long competitive run for years to come. We need more pieces, including a young number 1 goalie.

As would everyone else, but that doesn't mean Nonis is just going to accept not making the playoffs, I'm sure he's going to try to improve the club day in and day out but the point being it won't be youth for vets or trading first round picks which is such a beautiful thing to read lol

Dave Nonis traded for Luongo from Florida. Signed him to a 4 year contract. But it was Gillis who signed him to what you call a ruinous contract.

And hopefully he lets Lou stay in Vancouver. Unless Nonis pays nothing for him. Us Leafs fans would not turn that down. Lol.

It's actually a little funny because most of what people are praising Nonis for here is what Burke did (and in many cases SAID word for word). Weird.
