As if getting fixated in hindsight on a one single player who was drafted with later pick wouldn't be bad enough, do we really have to do it when neither of Dumba or Trouba have even played a game in the NHL?
My top choice last year for defense were Rielly and Linholm, both were gone. Having said that while I wasn't thrilled with the Dumba pick, I think we did get a good one. He might need more seasoning before he joins the big league but he should be a good dman for us. I am encouraged by his play after the training camp, he really picked it up and played better.
I would be happy to see Dumba play in the CHL again. We've been spoiled with prospects like Granlund and Brodin who've shined in men's league. Sometimes, you need to be patient.
Besides, the kid is really, really young. I think he might need 1 or 2 seasons in Iowa before finally getting a part-time NHL run. It's the best path for his development, and letting him learn the demands of the pro rink thoroughly. Not only that, but he is really small and plays really big. He will need tremendous lower body strength and he also needs to improve on his skating as a whole. He is already fast but not necessarily as good of a skater as he needs to be.
However, he does have tremendous upside, and if he pans out, the Subban comparison might not be far.
