I couldn't believe he was still around, but I was still willing to pass on him for this guy for sheer positional value. I learned my lesson after passing on Brett/Jones

Mickey Cochrane - Catcher

2 time MVP
.419 career OBP
3 time World Series Champion
Highest career batting average among retired catchers (.320)
Highest career OBP for a catcher
Name inspiration for Mickey Mantle

I would have found it difficult to pick anybody in this spot. I already got left in the cold in the run on third base in an effort to add power, not doing the same with somebody of this magnitude available.

I was torn between Cochrane and Fisk as far as catches go, but Fisk's power and longevity got the nod.

Still a great pick, at any rate.

I'd say Cochrane had more power than Fisk. Comparing their numbers through age 34 (that's when Cochrane retired due to being smoked in the head) and includes Fisk's best seasons and eliminated his decline.

Fisk

SLG: .464
OPS: .818
OPS+: 123
XBH: 455

Cocharane

SLG: .478
OPS: .897
OPS+: 129
XBH: 516

Now it is true that Fisk hit home runs at a higher rate, however as their respective slugging % numbers show, Cochrane was the one who was putting up more bases, which means he was hitting for gap power, not over the fence power. The longevity factor cannot be questioned though. Although its not like Cochrane faded early, he was forced into retirement after being hit in the head.

73 - New York Yankees select - SP Ed Walsh

2 x top-2 MVP finishes
195 career win
5 x pitched over 350 innings in a season
1.82 career ERA - 1st all time
1.00 WHIP - 2nd best all time
World Series Champion

Quote:
From 1906 to 1912, he had several dominant seasons where he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. Injuries shortened his career. Walsh holds the record for lowest career earned run average, 1.82

This was by far my toughest pick so far. After much deliberation, the Newark Eagles select 2B Rod Carew

One of the greatest contact hitters in the history of the sport, Carew finished his career with a .328 batting average and a .393 OBP. Along the way, he picked up 3,053 hits, 353 steals (including 7 (!) steals of home in 1969), made 18 consecutive all-star games, and won the 1967 rookie of the year and the 1977 MVP (hitting a league leading .388)

The St. Louis Browns are pleased to welcome 1B Eddie Murray to their team. Eddie is a switch hitter, and one of only four players with 3000 hits and 500 home runs. He drove in 75+ runs for 20 seasons in a row, a record, and won three Gold Gloves, adding to the strong defensive infield the Browns have begun to create.

I had Eddie last draft. Underrated player.

Also, I think you meant 1 of 4 players with 3,000 hits and 500 HRs.

Me likey biographies. I still haven't had a chance to draft Speaker yet though out of the others in this pic I've drafted all of them at some point or another I believe. Couldn't fit any more in the pic, it's an addiction I think.

Gonna try and get my hands on Gibson and Satchel biographies. They would be awesome reads.

There's some really hilarious anecdotes in the Satchel biography. For instance, he had girlfriends in every town that they rode through, one time his steady gf decided to surprise him at the team hotel. He had his mistress put up in a room across the hall from his. At lights out he went across the hall to knock on the door for Nancy, at that point a "yet undrafted ATD5" player saw his steady gf walking up the stairs to surprise Satchel. Quick on his feet, he immediately called over to Satchel, "yeah what do you want Satch?", his steady comes up and says you call "xxxxxx, Nancy?". Satch replied that was his nickname and as the undrafted player recalls in the book. That's still my nickname today 50 years later, "Nancy". LOL.
