The Pittsburgh Crawfords are pleased to select a criminally underrated player historically (by everyone except Bill James who has him 10th all-time among LFers) in OF - Minnie Minoso. Minoso's appearance on top 5 leaderboards reads like a William Taft grocery list. He will provide the Crawfords with even more punch off the bench, beyond excellent speed and a fine defensive option as well.

- 7 Time All-Star
- 3 Time Gold Glove Winner
- 4 Times Top 5 MVP Voting
- 5 Times Top 5 Batting Average
- 5 Times Top 5 OBP %
- 8 Times Top 5 Runs Scored
- 5 Times Top 5 Hits (Led League Once)
- 3 Times Top 5 RBI
- 8 Times Top 5 Stolen Bases (Led League 3 Times in a Row)

Brooklyn will go outside the box here, bringing in arguably the greatest pitcher in Japanese history, Masaichi Kaneda

Essentially the left-handed Walter Johnson of the Japanese Leagues, Kaneda is the all-time winningest pitcher in Japanese history with 400 victories. He played on notoriously poor teams for a vast majority of his career, much like Johnson, so he also had 298 losses. He also had difficulty with control for much of his career, but was a fireballer who struck out over 4000 batters in his career. Kaneda was so much better than any of the other pitchers the Swallows had that he would come in relief and finish out games on his throwing days. He appeared in 944 games, starting 569 games and 375 games in relief.

Quote:
The speed gun was not introduced to Japan until after Kaneda had retired, but he himself claims that the velocity of his fastball reached 100 mph during his prime. In Kaneda's rookie year, players complained that Kaneda's pitches were too fast because the mound was set too close to the batter's box. The game was stopped as the umpire measured the distance with a tape measure; the mound was found to be set the correct distance away from the batter's box.

Kaneda holds numerous career records in the Japanese leagues. Notable records include: complete games (365), wins (400), losses (298), strikeouts (4490), innings pitched (5,526 2/3), and walks (1,808). He also has the most home runs of any Japanese pitcher (36), and is one of the few pitchers that has played in over 1,000 games. He led the league in strikeouts (10 times), wins (three times), ERA (three times), and won the Eiji Sawamura Award three times.
-944 Games
-400 Wins
-298 Losses
-5,526 2/3 Innings pitched
-4,490 Strikeouts
-2.34 ERA

The New York Giants select OF Reggie Smith.

  • 7 time All-Star
  • 1968 Gold Glove
  • 1981 World Series Champion
  • Career 137 OPS+
  • Career .287/.366/.489
  • Career 60.8 WAR - 16th all-time among RFers

Smith is one of the more underrated players of the 70's, hitting at least 20 HR's 8 times while also leading the league in doubles twice and playing excellent defense. Smith also possessed one of the strongest throwing arms in the league during his career. A switch hitter who also played regularly in center field and first base, Smith's consistency and versatility make him a valuable 4th outfielder.

Cleveland Indians select

1B Mark Teixeira

131 OPS+
5 time gold glove winner
3 time silver slugger
45.4 Career WAR
2009 World Series winner

Teixeira is a great defensive and offensive first baseman. He is probably a capable starter in the all time format but will serve primarily as a bat off the bench and provides a very strong 1/2 punch with Mize as the starter.

To be fair, his clock was 1 am - 9 am. That's rough.

That happened to me on the weekend, besides we pretty much have to skip every pick of his. He's lucky he's not being auto-skipped.

Newark selects arguably the greatest pitcher in Cuban history, Pedro Luis Lazo.

With 249 wins (1st all-time), 179 complete games (4th all-time), and 2426 strikeouts (2nd all-time), Lazo is a towering figure in the history of Cuban baseball. He also proved himself repeatedly in international play on Cuba's national team, where he served as the closer and routinely shut down big league talent with a 97+ mph fastball and a hard slider.

I will likely use him out of the bullpen, but we'll see how the rest of the draft shakes out.
