Don't second guess that pick, good one. The mad at should be indication enough that it was a wise choice.

Yeah, pretty sure Jagr has to bring a top 5 offensive package here right? Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux are the top three....then probably him and Bobby Hull right?

Good to see number 68 in the top 20. I love that pick.

I know I bumped Trottier up a couple of spots two drafts ago. Looks like it stuck.

I think he brings more to the table than Clarke to be honest. He is elite in the things that Clarke is also elite but he adds size and discipline and goalscoring too.

Clarke is one of the few players in the early going that Trottier actually has a longevity advantage on as well.

Depending on how you evaluate much earlier era players, yeah, Jagr has to be up there.

I was considering a couple other guys but I just couldn't pass up his talent, size, puck possession etc.

I haven't built from the wing before so that will be new for me too.

Okay, with the 18th selection in the 2013 All-Time Draft and Grammar Jamboree, the Mystery Alaskans are going with Howie Morenz, C.

Here is Hawkey Town's profile from last year, which Dreakmur and I hope to improve upon (even though it's already pretty impressive!).

Morenz would have been my second choice after Kelly if I drafted in this range. People who watched them both seem to have favored him over Shore.

I think Morenz is closer (better?) to Stan Mikita than Clarke/Trottier

And BC, you make some good point on the Clarke/Trottier discussion. Similar players indeed.

I rank Morenz just a tad over Mikita too. But Morenz is more difficult to build around that Mikita (or Clarke/Trottier).

Nice. Jags is just laughably easy to build around - can set up his linemates just as easily as he can dangle around 2 defenders and put the puck in the net himself.

I actually think the difficulty in building around Jagr is why he usually fell farther than his raw talent would indicate.

(Well, that and the tradition of this forum to overrate the intangibles, both good and bad, of modern players, and in Jagr's case, the intangibles are negative).

Yeah he's a guy that we're specifically looking forward to researching. He definitely does seem to be preferred to Shore in his era (that 1950 National Press Poll that named him the best ever for one thing), plus he seems to at least be solid defensively (or at least willing nonetheless).

Like I said, I'm interested to see what else we find.

Why do you think he's difficult? He's a balanced offensive force unlike a couple other wingers in this range.

He needs to play a certain style or he'll sulk and be less effective. I don't think a traditional ATD line build around Jagr would really work.

I think Morenz is a great pick, IMO the 4th best center after Gretzky, Lemieux, and Beliveau. After researching him last year I think the reputation he has about being difficult to build around is quite overstated. People think of him as biased towards goalscoring, but post forward pass he actually has slightly better top 10 assists finishes than goal finishes.

I think he was as good as any center of his era at playmaking, but his goal scoring was even better than his playmaking. I also have him as the 4th best center. (In before Sturminator calls him overrated).

Count me in as someone whose list got destroyed (Jagr was my guy at #19 from the get-go, followed by Morenz. Also liked Clarke, Kelly, Trottier)

Before I pick, I'd like to direct your attention to this statement I made in the "Evolution of our Teams" thread after last year's draft.

Quote:
However, I don't think I'll ever start off my ATD with a goalie again, unless it's outstanding value.
But damnit, I like the value, and I'm not one to play by ANYONE'S rules, including my own.

Oh man oh man oh man, here it comes, here it comes.

HNNNNNNNNNGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

This guy:

(that's Dominik Hasek, in case nobody figured it out. That's my pick. Good day.)

Hasek's one player whose injury history gets glossed over in this forum, probably because the most popular goalie stats are averages of per-game performances.

Still arguably the best goalie of all time.

I could never convince myself to build around a goalie again, even if it's solid value like Dom at 19.

By this point everyone drafting after me knows that I will never take a goalie in the first few rounds.

(Until eventually I buck the trend... maybe)
