We wanted Vezina. Is that grounds for a veto?

Hershey is basically giving the pick away for nothing, but it's hard to take an issue with such a minor trade. Just to play it safe, I'd like a second opinion.

C'mon TDMM. Now you've gone too far.

Wait 8 slots now and gain 5 and 8 later is "giving the pick away"? We aren't even waiting a half or a third of a round, just 8 slots now. My co-GM and I have a shortlist with 5 guys on it, any of whom we'd be happy with, and can easily afford to wait a mere 8 slots now, and gain 5 and 8 slots later when our shortlists may not be so long or with players so equally valued by us.

Geez.

I'm not on the trade committee, but here's my two cents...

I agree that Hershey isn't getting enough, but there's no way it's going to disrupt the competitive balance of the draft, so it should be approved.

How is he not getting enough? He's barely giving anything up. Receiving substantive value for an 8 pick drop would be unbalancing.

I certainly don't find this trade vetoable.

I definitely think there's a clear winner and loser, but that doesn't matter. It's not egregious enough.

I think it's okay.

9 picks now is small but has some value because everyone has an idea of who is availiable. 5 picks in the 300s has almost no value this far in advance. 8 picks in the 400s has basically zero value this far in advance.

Regardless, the trade goes through.

Edit: Sorry VI, I didn't realize you have that end of the round / beginning of the next round combo that can be tough to deal with.

I just don't see it that way.
1) We can look at past drafts to have rough ideas.
2) It's always better to pick sooner.

We're looking to trade up for a specific player. Anybody owning a pick in the near future that they want to unload, let me or vecens know

Case in point, when I traded back 5 spots early in the 5th, and gained 7 spots in the 6th, I may not have known what it would entail, but now I know that because of that swap, I got Martin St Louis, who would not have been available otherwise.

IMO your trade was much different than the one that you made that comment about. Let's look at them...

to: Hartford Whalers: 135th, 188th & 316th
to: Minnesota Fighting Saints: 140th, 181st & 309st

To Hershey: 199, 314, 442
To Kenora: 191, 319, 450

You were giving up 5 now for 7 about 45 picks later and then getting another 7 175 picks later.

The other trade was giving up 8 now for 5 125 later and 8 more 250 later.

Look how much longer Hershey has to wait to get the full 8 spots they gave up back, and look how much less total picks they get in the end comapred to what they gave up. You are gaining 14 picks for 5, they are gaining 13 picks for 8.

I certainly don't think it's vetoable, I just think Hershey should have been compensated more.
