Jonathan Ericsson and Brendan Smith both started playing hockey as forwards and converted to defense sometime before jumping to the NHL (with Ericsson, he played defense as a fill-in and it was made permanent at the suggestion of Wings scout Hakan Andersson, who was at the game).

forgot to mention about Vladimir Konstantinov. He played at the World Championship 86 in this role

Nathan Paetsch played a bit at forward with the Sabres. I don't think he ever played higher than the 4th line.

Brooks Orpik and Ryan Whitney played less than a handful of games on the 4th line, but I'm guessing you're looking for a player who regularly switched between F and D

Whitney: http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/...gnment-386703/

Orpik: http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/...-weird-378405/

Not all that uncommon with goons. Steve MacIntyre was a defenseman in the WHL. Paul Bissonnette was a defenseman in juniors and in the ECHL but switched to forward when it became clear being an enforcer would be his best shot of making the NHL.
