LHD Mark Stuart: He'll punch your face

Most of you know I'm not a fan of Stuart on the top4, but honestly I don't mind him as a 5/6... although my preference is a #6 with 2nd PK (not first!).

Even Strength and PP Production
YEARPOSGPESTOI/60ESP/60ESGESAPPTOI/60PPP/60PPGPPASHTOI/60SHGSHASOG
2007 D 8213.38 0.33 4 03 0.28 02.58 01 1.26 00 60
2008 D 8213.87 0.79 5 11 0.06 13.04 01 1.19 00 61
2009 D 5615.21 0.28 2 05 0.10 00.00 00 1.20 00 53
2010 D 5413.38 0.50 2 04 0.12 00.00 00 1.95 00 41
2011 D 8014.04 0.64 2 11 0.03 00.00 00 2.78 10 60
Unfortunately with pretty much -1 top4 D for most of the season, Noel had to play heavier minutes and more PK to Stuart than is usual. Now to be honest, Stuart was a decent PKer for Boston in 2009, but he wasn't that great in any other year... in fact, for every other year he tends to have both the teams worse in allowing shots on goal and goals against per minute. I'm not a huge fan of people's who PIM exceed their SOG.

Even Strength Advance Stats
YEARRelQoCOZSRelCorsiCorsiG/60A1/60P/60
2007 0.002 49.7 -02.4 0.60 0.27 0.050.33
2008 -0.461 50.9 -02.9 -1.21 0.26 0.110.79
2009 -0.202 52.9 -12.5 -1.48 0.07 0.140.28
2010 -0.280 50.7 -09.2 -4.32 0.17 0.250.50
2011 -0.103 50.2 -06.2 -3.42 0.05 0.210.64
2007: the only year where Stuart actually beats his competition (Corsi) although he isn't exactly facing Hainsey/Bogosian tough minutes or OZS.
2008-2009: Stuart continues to be sheltered and gains and loses point production depending on how his secondary assists go for the most part.
2010: Stuart gains some bigger minutes with Bogosian, Hainsey and Byfuglien's injuries but unfortunately doesn't do so swell.

2011-12 WOWY Stuart:
PartnerTOI CF%withGF%withCF%withoutGF%without
Bogosian 369 0.466 0.423 0.511 0.492
Jones 298 0.519 0.615 0.475 0.474
Byfuglien 159 0.489 0.211 0.542 0.526
Oduya 089 0.431 0.000 0.491 0.488
Hainsey 062 0.427 1.000 0.491 0.534
>0.500 is good; <0.500 is bad
Oduya and Hainsey's TOI is kind of too small to make anything out of the GF% since they were only on together for 1 goal each (1 GF w/ Hainsey and 1 GA w/ Oduya).
What I get out of this? Stuart cannot do top4 shutdown. Look how much nicer everyone's stats get without him. BUT, as much as I beat on Stuart look at him with Jones. When Stuart was with Jones they were playing nice sheltered 3rd pairing minutes... and they out shot/chanced and out scored their opponents! Yes!! Put Stuart against bottom 6 players and he becomes an asset.

Summary
IMHO, Stuart is a #6 with secondary PK. He brings grit and the guy HATES to lose. He can beat on 3rd/4th line pylons who don't take advantage of Stuart's weaknesses and end up with a great moral affect in our favour. I don't like Stuart as a #5 for the problem we're seeing right now, Bogosian (one of our top4) is now injured and now Stuart get's pushed into a role that is outside of his abilities. I guess in the real world nothing can be perfect so oh well.

Defensemen (8)
$20,325,000
Byfuglien, Dustin $5,200,000
Hainsey, Ron $4,500,000
Enstrom, Tobias $3,750,000 $5,750,000
Bogosian, Zach $2,500,000
Stuart, Mark $1,700,000
Clitsome, Grant $1,250,000

Even though numbers don't completely define value to a team, your analysis makes some sense.
If you factor in salary to this analysis, you get whay you pay for and our top 4 need really need to earn their money.

I think numbers say a lot... if you aren't out-scoring the team you're losing... if you aren't out-chancing the other team than you don't have much of a chance of out-scoring...

Salary would be better than "getting what you pay for"
Byfuglien 4.25mil on-par top10 offensive D
Enstrom 4.50mil on-par top10 two-way D
Hainsey 3.00mil on-par for #4 signed in the last 4 years
Bogosian 3.00mil on-par for #3 (great if you think potential but that doesn't mater in get what you pay for)
Stuart 1.70mil on-par for #5/6
Clitsome 1.40mil over-paid for #7

So the only one I see that is overpaid is Clitsome and 1.4mil ain't that bad

I love Stu. He's a heart and soul player and is the kind of guy that you win with. IMO he is a perfect bottom pairing (6th would be perfect I agree) d-man. He isn't afraid to block shots, throw the body, and stand up for his teammates. Bruins fans have constantly said how much they'd like to have him back.

Exactly!

He's a guy who's team influence is great and by putting him in sheltered 3rd pairing minutes, he'll have very minimal negative on-ice affect if any
