Sheppard, maybe but I don't know that Petrecki would get picked up. The Sharks will need to make multiple roster moves if everyone gets healthy and Gomez gets a contract..

So Shep & Petrecki have to stay in SJ the whole year?

petrecki is still young (for defensemen), and he still has that it factor going for him that he could be the next big bodied defender and sound defensively.

he would for sure be picked up as a win-win for the team picking him up.

nevermind just looked him up he is still young period at 23 years old.

What I see happening is: Gomez is signed, then they send down Irwin once Burns and Demers, then if Petrecki gets any playing time and impresses Murray will be traded, Petrecki then stays on as the 7th defenseman and Sheppard stays as 13th foward but could be higher if Handzus falters.

Some fans may think he still has that "it factor" but coaches and GM's aren't fans. I sort of got the impression that this was his make or break year with the org. He's been a whole lot better this season but it's still just 1/2 an AHL season.

I also didn't say he wouldn't get picked up, it seems likely someone would take him. But a lot of players that fans are convinced won't clear waivers often do.

The Sharks could make a trade to open a roster spot as well but I don't think they'll want to keep 8 d-men on the roster for the entire season (again, if everyone gets healthy).

If they don't want to trade any of their roster players the options to clear roster spots are McLaren, Sheppard and Petrecki.

Considering Burns still isn't skating this probably isn't going to be an issue for at least a little while.

Would petreki even have to be waived? He is on a two way contract and hasn't played in the NHL before. Unless something has changed in this new CBA I was under the impression that players who had two way contracts who had played under a certain threshold of NHL games could be sent back and forth without passing through waivers.

I hope this is the case for Petrecki. Maybe being with bigbird for a while will help with his development

Exemption to waivers is based on age first NHL contract was signed, # of years elapsed and # of NHL games played. See Article 13 of 2005 CBA (AFAIK, that section has not changed, or at least in the important areas). NOTHING TO DO with one-way or two-way contract. Skaters who sign at 18, have 5 years (or 160 games) exempt; 19 = 4/160; 20 = 3/160; etc.

Irwin is exempt this year, but won't be next. Petrecki, signed at 19, so should have four years of exemption, but it was the spring of his 19th year, so Capgeek counts it as he signed at age 20; so they claim his is subject to waivers this year (even though he hasn't played a game).

This also suggests that Gomez was saddled with linemates who couldn't pull their weight.

Free agent forward Scott Gomez continues his evaluation period with the Sharks, and for the first time skated with the full team on Monday in Edmonton. Gomez was wearing a teal jersey with the other bottom six forwards and scratches.

Is the delay in signing Gomez due to the possibility of a multi-year contract?

In my opinion, I doubt they've began any negotiations. It's likely still in a state where they're determining his level of play, conditioning, health and preparedness.

When they get him back on US soil, he'll be signed.

Is there a reason for this? (contract law?) I kind of wondered if they wanted to wait until they were in SJ too.

Gomez is just happy to be able to play this year. Remember, he and Redden were basically told to sit this season out so they can be bought out next season. I have a feeling he will be signed for $800k this season and if he does well he might get offered a 2 year contract next year for around $2mil per year. His value has gone down and I think he has realize that. However, he is still, or can get back to a very skilled forward. I'm stoked we are even having him practice with the team.

3rd line center :-)

It's all just taking so long because there's a lot of legal legwork involved in DW giving him a 10-year, $86 million contract with a complete NMC, partial ownership of the team and assistant coaching duties.

I hope it takes at least a few more days to get this done so I can continue to read your new and improved DW contract offers for him!

Which DW will get dispensation to exceed (again, part of why it's taking so long)

It's not variations. It's one ongoing joke.
