Absolutely no-risk signing. We are in dire need of forward depth and Gomez helps in that area. Whether or not he pans out, at least we can say at this point that there is a chance he will be able to improve the team.
I know you're not a fan of Sheppard but both he and especially Wingels have some pretty good upside. It's also extremely unlikely Wingels would clear waivers and there's zero chance the Sharks would risk exposing him.
Getting Gomez a roster spot is easy but when they need to move a roster player to get Demers and/or Burns into the lineup it's likely to be some combo of Sheppard, Irwin, Petrecki & McLaren going.
Actually i am a fan of sheppard, i just don't think to many if any would take the chance on him.
If there's multiple teams after him he won't choose the Sharks. If the Sharks are the only ones after him then DW will bid against himself and give him a 1 year 2.5 mill contract because he's a terrible negotiator.
Thanks! I've been wondering what kind of player he's like.
How is he on the PK? If he plays, I bet Handzus is out and we'd want a forward who can take his place on the PK.
I don't remember Gomez getting much PK time, but he was injured for a good chunk of last season, plus the Habs already had/have some great PK forwards. In theory, his speed could make him effective.
PS: I've noticed YT clips posted of Gomer's past highlights in this thread. Don't expect him to magically recreate those moments. He may not have lost the physical ability to shoot and score, but his mental confidence and commitment made him next to useless over the past two years. Move him into the offensive zone and he disappears like a Spinal Tap drummer. Habs fans waited for him to return, and waited... and waited some more. Again, the Sharks might be the perfect antidote for him. I have nothing against the guy and hope he does for you what he didn't for us.
Habs fan coming in peace! I just want to wish you the best with Scott Gomez. I think that at that price and with a limited role he could be helpful for your team. Probably not at an all-star level but still. He needed a change and unless they ask him to be a mentor, it is a low risk - ??? reward signature for you.
Good luck, and let's hope to face each other this season (because with the calendar, that would be in Stanley Cup finals!), even if it is probably impossible on our side.
