I've heard that they've become real close friends, and are really stoked about playing together.

Obviously everything else is a factor as well, though.

Great news. So happy to see this.

Getting Edler at this price & term is arguably the best move Gillis has made since he got here.

Edler is the only player on the roster or in the system who has the potential to be a franchise D-man. Worst case scenario he's an above average #2 defender. Having a player like that locked up for his prime years for 5 mill per is great.

I wasn't aware of that. Definately could have factored in then.

Well done Edler. He's the one willing to leave money on the table to stay in a great environment...

Having Hamhuis, Bieksa, Edler, Garrison and Schneider locked up longterm is huge. There's no reason this team should only have a 2 year window. That's an outstanding group of 5 guys to build a backend around.

Swedes aren't so much about the money are they?

Tough not to be happy with this. Would have easily accepted paying more for Edler.

I'd argue it's built.... all you need is a few guys who can play 10-12 minutes a game to compliment and some depth. We've got that.

What a fantastic deal! Even a hardcore Canuck hater would have a hard time trashing this deal.

Gillis is a boss and I'm glad he's our gm.

This signing just serves as that reminder

Wow. This has just made my day. Kudos to Edler for obviously valuing some thing above money.

But if this means we have to trade Ballard now, and break up the Ballard-Tanev pairing to go with Barker-Tanev, so help me god...

What a deal. Perfect length as well. And I was expecting around 6M so this is great.

And to think he was being raked over the coals just 4 hours ago.

What a great contract, amazing that Edler was willing to leave so much money on the table. Having our top 4 and Schneider locked up for at least a couple more years guarantees we'll be competitive for the duration of their deals. Even if the offense dries up a bit, these 5 alone are good enough to push a team into the playoffs. Amazing steal and a salute to Gillis for getting Edler to sign for so cheap.

I like the term more than the cap hit TBH I don't Edler is amazing, he's inconsistent and rarely controls or takes over a game. His back is also a really big concern and that's what makes 6 years better than 8.

It's a ''steal'' compared to what he would've been signed to by a desperate team as a UFA, but for what he gives us its about right.

Great deal. What a steal! Imagine if Ballard started to play like he did in Phoenix. 5 top-4 defensemen locked up long term. Would be unreal.

Well we know that Ballard will be traded or bought out at some point. No way they keep a $4.2 mil 5/6 guy next year.
