Since coming back from a very good showing at the WJC's, Jaskin in 3 games has 5 goals and 8 assists for 13 pts and is completely dominating.
My question for those that get to watch him in the Q, what do you feel is his upside? For me the things I notice the most is how good his hands are for a guy his size and how well he sees the ice. You can tell he has a high hockey IQ as well with the passes he makes. I personally think his upside could be a Bertuzzi-type with a good chance to at the very least be a very solid bottom six grinder. What do you all think?
He's a bit of a man among boys in the Q, he has great size, it's his second post-draft season, and he's already been playing against men for two years in the Czech league. I like him as a prospect, though, he seems to have improved his skating, and as you noted he has nice hands and some pretty decent offensive talent for a 2-way power forward type. I definitely don't think he's going to be close to as good as prime Bertuzzi, and he's not as intimidating either, but I do see him as a future NHLer.
Yeah, Ponder, the Bertuzzi comment I meant as top-end if everything comes together. Hitchcock recently said in an interview that his style of play reminds him a lot of Jagr. He's not saying he's going to become Jagr, just style. I see him as being quite physical but yeah, Bertuzzi physically was a wrecking ball for such a big man. I see it more with their hands.
With Jaskin though I think it all comes down to confidence. He lost a lot last year being stuck on a 4th line and battling injuries in CZE and now after getting to play his game you can see he's getting more and more confident each game. I think these last 25-30 games Jaskin is going to have more and more people talking about him and noticing him.
Pretty much all Blues fans figured he'd probably still need at least a year in the AHL before being NHL ready. I still think that would be the best route to take but if he was ready in camp, what a great problem to have.

If Grigorenko is NHL ready, Jaskin as well for sure.
Danny Flynn has him pegged as a Marian Hossa 2.0 but I see some Jagr 2.0 in him. Best player in the QMJHL. He'll have no problem transitioning to the AHL/NHL. I can see him in the NHL as soon as next season if not , for sure the 2014-15 season. He can do it all. He's a power forward that's almost impossible to knock off the puck. He shelters himself and never gets stripped. Not a perimeter player at all , he goes through his oppoenents. Lethal shot , dead on accuracy but also an elite passer/playmaker. Finishes hit checks and punishes his opponents with brute force. Dmitri carries his work ethic into the locker room as well and is usually the first to hit the ice and gym and last to leave. He makes players around him look good. Very bright future and was a steal in the 2nd round for the Blues'!
Very nice, Wildcat. That's what I'm seeing as well, but obviously not locally but through family. Hitchcock said he reminds him of Jagr like I said before. That's very high praise, especially coming from Hitchcock who is generally careful talking about prospects. But the one's he really likes you can tell...and that is Tarasenko, Schwartz and now Jaskin. He seems high on Rattie but I think he really likes Jaskin. Puck control I can see some Jagr and I'm shocked when I see some passing plays he generates. But he's far more physical than Jagr and that's why I thought Bertuzzi was maybe a good comparison based on size and puck skills while being physical. Anyhow, great analysis.
Just checked his game by game breakdown... After 'only' racking up 20 points in his first 17 games through to the end of October (NA adjustment period?) he has gone on to pick up 43 points in his last 17 games. I am sure people will scold me for 'stat watching' but I dare say at this point in his career he has outgrown playing in juniors.
Also count me in the group that is relieved to find out he is only fuguratively and not literally on fire.
Too many players put up big numbers in juniors but as pro its different.
Everybody was thrilled about Etem, McKegg, Toffoli etc but its not that easy in the AHL, let alone that a player should be in the NHL. The ultimate step.

It's not just the points. He looks like a man amongst boys. He was excellent as well at the WJC.

Jaskin is ahead of all those guys in his game. He scores, back checks, uses his body and skates well. He doesn't have any of the noticeable flaws that the prospects you mentioned have.
If Jaskin is this good, I shutter to think about what Hertl could do in junior hockey. I think he'd break every record out there. Anyways, St. Louis and San Jose have very good prospects in these young Czech's. Should be fun to watch in the NHL.

Whatever you meant by "I would like to see it first". He's a pretty impressive player. I don't think he's NHL ready right now, or will be for the 13-14 season, but if he has a good season in the AHL, I could see him in St. Louis for the 14-15 season.
