Can you say "anti-climatic?" Jets start strong then stumble to a 4-1 loss to the Sens

For a team that's supposedly one of the biggest in the NHL, this team lacks intensity. So I guess size does not equal intensity. Pretty concerning for a team that seems obsessed with getting bigger (and did just that this offseason) and yet don't seem all that intimidating to play against. I would rather have a team that had a few extra players who are 6 feet tall and weigh 195 - 200 lbs. that can grind in the corners and lay out the opposition with big hits, not to mention dish out accurate passes, than what appears to be a team largely composed of 6"2' - 6'3 players weighing 215 - 225 lbs who play soft, rarely lay out the opposition and appear to be incapable of making a tape-to-tape pass. Pretty much proves size does not equal dominance..at least, not yet.

As for the intensity, it seemed to take a vacation in the second half of the game. At that point, in the second period, the JEts were outshooting the Sens something like 8 - 0 or 10 - 0 and was feeling pretty good about the outcome despite a tie game at that point.

Pavs needs to be better, but to blame him for 3 "weak" goals is ridiculous.
Kane, to me, was largely invisible, and seemed to be the same old Kane (hello wraparound).
Buff and Toby were quite good despite a few miscues.
Postma actually seemed fairly competent outside his blueline. Inside his blueline, on the other hand, yikes!
Clitter is somehting awful. NOt reliable at all even in a bottom pairing. Bring on Redmond!
Ollie seems to skate fairly well and use his body to his advantage in the corners but his passes were off today. Hopefully, just a rust thing.
Scheifelle was solid, generated a few good scoring opportunities. A little unsteady on his skates, but I look forward to the next week to see if he can improve, if even only marginally.
Wellwood was a non-factor. Our offense won't be considered legit if we have this guy in our top - 6.
Ladd, Wheeler and Little seemed to start OK, but faded in the second half of the game. Conditioning or just Ottawa doing a good job shutting them down?
BAP line was the best line of the night. Generated some scoring chances and appeared to play responsible in their own end for the most part. I hope we can keep this group together (or maybe Ponikarovsky is replaced by Lowry or Telegin next season) as they seem to be an ideal 3rd line.

Some major concerns about the goaltending and the defense, but I'm not gonna panic just yet. I'll wait until the 10-15 game mark for that.

Yeah I couldn't believe it was so quiet.
But it was a pretty boring game. So much anticipation for this game, such a let down. Man Buff should have had three goals out there.

This game was a quick reminder of how bad our defense is. Clitsome screening, like what the hell were you thinking, you were the only guy infront of the net lol.

Personally think Clitsome needs to sit next game, both Redmond and Postma have at least been playing in the AHL. Postma showed some O-flash, sure he coughed the puck up but it's a lot easier to teach a D man to play proper D than try and turn a D into an offensive threat.

Aside from Scheff getting knocked off his feet fairly easily we also saw a lot of that with Wheeler last season, both guys have tons of offensive upside.

Poni looked to be the weakest link on the USSR line. He ain't fast.

Both Buff and Enstrom looked to be in mid season form, Stuart and Hainsey not so much, guys criticized Postma's pizza that led to goal, damn Hainsey did the same thing behind his net that led directly to a goal, just saying.

Really don't know what Thorburn brings if he isn't willing to hit everything in site or stir the pot a little. Sit him and dress Peluso or Wright.

Joki looked good the first half of the game and disappeared after that.

Both Kane and Wheeler and Little for that matter need to be told this isn't exhibition.

USSR line looked solid, they have all been playing in Europe and it shows. (obviously Burmi played in the A)

Really a let down for the fans this game, would have thought the players would have given a better effort in the home opener after a 9 month lay off.

PS went back and read the post above No argument on any of p241's review
This is pretty much exactly my view on the game, thanks for saving me some time

Fixed. Though I want him to succeed, I will be slightly happy when some people here realize he's not the star they think he is.

Started strong... 2 posts instead of 2 goals... would have been a completely different game. As soon as Byfuglien scored, they seemed to loose all semblance of a coordinated effort.

Hainsey and Postma with the "easy clear magically turned into an opposition goal" trick. Welwood passing to invisible teammates and passing to an out of position player instead of shooting. Ladd with another back breaker in the 3rd. General inability to make standard NHL quality tape-to-tape passes... little passes right at opponent blue line that were easily intercepted and turned around. Couldn't dump it in, couldn't carry it in.

1/2 price concessions... wow. Good on ya I guess... a good effort would have been more welcome.

Don't forget about Carolina, they lost 5-1 to the Panthers. Washington took a thumping too.

One shouldn't make judgement on one game but I will anyways.
PAVELEC is going to have to be outstanding for us to win. Probably should of had the first goal. Bad rebound on the second goal. No chance on the third goal. Forth goal bad but did not matter at that point.
DEFENCE bottom four were awful. Enstrom, Byfuglien and Bogosian all missed some time last year because of injuries. How did we survive last year? Oduya was not great? Kind of ironic that Byfuglien looked like the player in the best shape on the entire team. Redmond needs to play.
WHEELER was a disappointment as he has played this season. LADD shows playing street hockey is not enough to get you in game shape. KANE does not matter who you play with him. He will never have chemistry with anyone but somehow he will score his 30 a year.
USSR LINE I am not a fan of BUMistrov. He is a tease. Hustles, stickhandles, dipsy doodles but does not accomplish anything. He will be a 20 goal scorer sometime this year but it has taken him until his 3rd season to get there (19 career NHL goals). He is not a goal scorer. Not a playmaker. He does not make the players he plays with better. Everyone said that line was good today. Antropov 1 SOG Poni 0 SOG Burmistrov 0 SOG.
SCHEIFELE should be centering Antro and Poni. He is not going to accomplish anything by going back to Barrie. The ideal situation for him is to be a third line center this year. No preasure of being in the top six. He is ready. If he is not ready now what will be different next year. Little Jokinen and Burmistrov will all still be here.
WRIGHT and PELUSO need to play in Boston. See what they can do.

Carolina stunk up the joint, and you can definitely add Vancouver to that list as well. Yikes.

Yeah - agreed on both. One good thing - more controversy in Vancouver can only be a good thing!

The 'USSR' line played good because they played as expected, a solid checking third line, while the top lines were underwhelming to say the least. They had good puck possession, Burmi was good on the faceoffs, they had grit and overall, just played good defensively. Every time they were on, they were mostly in the offensive zone. LOADS better than the GST line we had last season, I think...

As much as I've been upset about how TC was handled/moves, let's remember this is one game. One sloppy game as teams try to get back into the groove.

USSR Line was great. Clearly showed they had all been playing, great puck control, in your face, gotta be happy with that emotion and offensive puck control while playing easily the hardest minutes. Love Antro going after Alfie, also saw him dominant Spezza in the corners a couple of times, that is a shutdown line with offense, love it. Don't like Noel screwing with the lines, in particular the USSR line, so fast. Stick with the lines for the game. Burmistrov was solid, throwing hits, working hard, the offense will come, the line had several great chances.

Don't think Postma was nearly as bad as people say. He had the one bad turnover, but really that should have stopped anyways.

I hope they give Scheifele a real chance with Joki and Kane, and stick with that.

I hope this is the lineup on Monday

Ladd - Little - Wheeler
Kane - Jokinen - Scheifele
Ponikarovsky - Antropov - Burmistrov
Wright - Slater - Thorburn

Enstrom - Byfuglien
Hainsey - Postma
Stuart - Redmond

(As an aside, Machacek scores the only goal in the STJ game today...)

Dubnyk (EDM)

Varlamov (COL)

Crawford (CHI)
Neuvirth (WSH)
Gustavsson (TOR)
Garon (TBL)
Emery (CHI)
Reimer (TOR)
S.Mason (CBJ)
Montoya (CBJ)
Roloson (TBL)
The problem with this list is that half of them are back-ups and only Hiller was remotely close in GP with 73 while the next closest was Bryzgalov with 9 less and after that the next closest had 20 games less. I mean you actually listed two goalies with half or less then half the GP as Pavs. That's no where near a fair comparison as well as adding in back-ups.

Pavelec had never had the work load and it showed near the end of the year as his numbers dropped.

Well that game sure sucked.

I had great fears about our d going into the game, and nothing has changed. Agree with ps241, we have a top 2 and bottom 4, that's sinking pretty fast. Agree with Holden, Clitsome needs to take a seat in the press box, let's see Redmond.

Not overly impressed with any Jet forward today. An off day, i'm hoping, for many of our offensive players. LLW needs to be much better.

Pavy really needs solid d infront of him. His non-traditional style likely needs fewer shots and solid zone play. Deflections will go in. The only goal that really concerns me (with Pavy) was the 4th goal. That's not playoff caliber goaltending.

Frustrating day. Took me 6 hrs to get back off the ledge.

Moped around for a few hours after that one. But hey, come next Saturday, we will have already had 3 more games in the books; including one in 48 hours.

I agree with everything here but the bolded.

I'm not one to rag on players, and this will be the last I speak of Postma's game (because really, it's one friggin' game, can happen to anyone), but he was horriawful. He flubbed a puck at the blue line that gave Zack Smith a clean break in the 3rd. I counted at least 4 passes of his that either led to turnovers or were just aimless. He didn't look comfortable on the PP, which is his bread and butter.

He was worse than Clitsome today, and that's saying something.

Could definitely live with that lineup. I don't know if I'd scratch Welly, but I wouldn't mind seeing him dropped to a defensive role on the 4th line, which is what he played quite effectively in San Jose. Clitsome can sit in the press box indefinitely for all I care, he's picked up where he left off at the tail end of last season.

I don't think it was so much the MTS Centre being quiet as it was the CBC muting the stadium audio.

As it was, almost nobody on the team is in game shape. It's going to be a rough first 10 games. Clitsome needs to sit the next game, and Postma needs to learn that you don't clear your zone up the middle.

While I think he was better than Clitsome, he for sure was for sure not great. He did not look comfortable at all out there, but it looked like a lot of rookie nerves to me. Just trying to do too much out there. I am hoping that the Jets show some faith in him, give him another chance.

They came in cold with no pre season games ever being played.

Hopefully the team is embarrassed & will show up in Boston on Monday for a win.

That could be a good point.

I still remain on the fact that Pav's has yet to post spectacular or solid numbers. But, I honestly do think Pavelec has it within him to do it. I hope that it's this season!

I know Noel would never do it but I might try...

Ladd - Little - Wheeler
Kane - Scheifele - Jokinen
Ponikarovsky - Burmistrov - Antropov
Wright - Slater - Thorburn/Wellwood

Enstrom - Byfuglien
Hainsey - Redmond
Stuart - Postma

I'd like to see how Scheifele would do distributing to two like this...
I think Antropov does better on the wing than Burmistrov and they are about equal at centre...
I'm not huge on Thorburn but I know some people want to see his thumping...
Redmond might be better on the second since he seems to be better with his defensive zone decisions (looking at only AHL level though)...

I watched the game and all of Machacek, Maceneaur and Meech had a solid game... I hope they bust the doors down and prove their worth in the NHL... i do...

I'm actually positive about the schedule. It's clear we need a few games back to back so 3 games in 4 nights should get our legs going. After that it's 2 days off for some practice, the coach should know what they need to change. Then it's a game every second night until Feb 1, and 3 days off. After that I'd expect some serious progress. With the compressed schedule it's rare to get days off like that. Feb also only has one back to back.

We'll see what happens, the talent is there but the conditioning and chemistry isn't. We have 3 new players, and 3 changed lines. We're also clearly behind the curve in the conditioning department.
