And the Sens still gave up a defenseman of his caliber to free agency and traded Foligno to fill the hole. This doesn't change that.
Foligno without a contract.

Also, stop with the Methot talk, you've watched one game, and already have a second opinion. Try watching 150 and then passing judgement.

Filip Kuba is not a top pair d-man. He never was, and never will be. He never had to be amazing, he had to be decent.

No, Foligno with the exact same contract as Methot.

Have you not read ANY of my posts? I said 1 game was too small a sample side. Let's see if he plays like over the course of the season. You're telling me to do exactly what I said we should do.

If he does play like this I'll be satisfied with Methot, but not necessarily the trade.

Foligno DID NOT have a contract.

Its funny you say one game is too small a sample size, when you use a ZERO game sample size on your previous Methot judgement.

I've watched him for three years, seriously, stop spouting crap.

My 10 year old niece plays tougher than Kuba.

Methot is exactly what our D needed. Kuba was a redundant part at best.

Foligno is a decent player, but he's all grind & hustle. He's easily replaceable. Smith, Neil, JOB and Greening can all play that game. We had to make room for Silfverberg and Regin (hope he stays healthy) on top of that.

Foligno was starting to get too expensive for what he brought to the table. Call it Campolitis if you want.

The best part of all of this...it was game one. Give them 15-20 games together and when they learn how to play with each other, look out.

Murray did a good job here. Now if he can flip Bishop for Smid, I'll pee my pants.

MAK, letting Kuba go wasn't as bad a decision as you make it out to be.

Kuba is 36 years old. Thirty six. How long do you think we could keep him around before he declines? At most 1-2 years. Trading Foligno for Methot is a lateral move value wise. Letting Kuba walk wasn't a huge loss. The obsession with getting mid or late round picks via trade out of every single UFA-to-be on HF is ridiculous.

Winning games doesn't depend on how many trades you win, it's about having the right players.

My cousin and I were praising him non stop throughout the game, it couldnt be helped. Were both Sudbury boys, so losing Foligno was a pretty tough spill to swallow, but I had faith we were getting something of equal value back. Methot so far is exactly what we hoped we were getting.

Absolutely amazing debut. I have no doubt his value to this team is going to be enormous.

Why stop at peeing your pants? If Murray could pull that off, I'd need a new change of underwear. Front and back.

Fantastic outing for a first game of the season/in a new uniform. If that was an accurate representation of his play, he's exactly what Karlsson needed.

Also, this was my reaction to Karlsson getting three points:

How awesome is that guy that he can have a three point game when he looks a little bit off? Wasn't a great game, by his standards.

Even though we probably missed Foligno's energy in that game, Methot's play was so impressive that it more than made up for it. You have to give something to get something, and we traded from an area of strength (forwards) to address a weakness that was created by Kuba's departure and the Brian Lee trade. But assuming Methot can play like this all the time, I make the trade even if we still have Kuba and Lee on the team. Just imagine:

Karlsson - Methot - Cowen - Kuba - Gonchar - Lee

with Phillips as your #7 (or switch him with Lee if you don't believe Phillips has regressed to the point of being a #7), and great depth in Bingo (Weir, Benoit, Gryba, Boro). Now that's an impressive defense, with a great mix of puck-moving talent and strength, experience and youth.

Given how thin our depth in defense is right now, Methot's play already appears to be critical to the success of the team this season.

It would be AMAZING if he and Karlsson could be our 'anchor' D pairing playing around 30 mins a night*. That way we can split the other 30 with Wiercioch, Phillips, Gonchar, Benoit, Lundin, who ever.

Having 1 dominant D pairing playing half the game could do wonders for our defence.

*not saying I think Methot is a 30 min a night guy, but in the right circumstance with Karlsson, who knows. I'm also drunk

It's one game, a game he played great in. A game he complemented EK very well in.

But, lets hope he can bring this performance on a night to night basis.

As a member of the Marc Methot Is Awesome organization, I can tell you that he won't be perfect all season, but he will be a great player for you guys. Also, as a person, he's just an amazing guy. He'll be (if not already) the community guy you see at all the events and since he's finally back home in Ottawa, probably even more so.

Methot was great last night, you can tell he's a better skater and hitter than Kuba after 1 game, this style of play can only help Karlsson even more than he was last year.
