I wonder how he can be this good. Even if it is two games. And have been the 4/5 on a bad Columbus defence last year. How could he have got so few points?

Now it just seems he is so much better than he must have been last year. He is well worth Foligno if he is this good.

The Sens clearly knew he was just what he is. Was he misused in Columbus? Do the Sens have the best pro scouting ever?

With all due respect to the teams we've played, they've been absolute ****.

As good as almost every player not named Chris Phillips has looked, Jets and Panthers have not been able to really test us.

Columbus was just so bad that offence from guys like him were an after thought. He just really had to try hard to not let the other team score. Luckily the Sens have a good system and its not him against the world. He actually has help.

Clearly we won't know how good the D are until they face some good 2 man fore checking pressure teams. That said even if all Methot does is match Kuba's strong defensive play of last year he's an upgrade because of his skating and physical play (hits). By his own admission he's no heavy weight fighter but if someone takes liberties with Karlsson he'll jump in immediately. Something Kuba couldn't do. Plus he said he understands his role well. He doesn't have to try to outshine Karlsson as the main puck mover. Put it all together and Methot is an important upgrade.

The one thing people aren't mentioning about Methot-Man's game is how effective he is at clearing the crease. He is creating lanes for Anderson to clearly see shots from the point. Cowen hasn't learned that "meanness" aspect of his game yet and the other guys we have don't do it nearly as effectively as he does.

Right now, Methot is a big-bodied d-man who knows how to throw his weight around. Pretty much the opposite of Kuba. During the breaks, you could see how much Andy appreciates it because he was constantly giving Methot the taps on the legs to say "thanks".

I like the presence he has when he has the puck (doesn't treat it like a grenade coughphillipscough) & I like the way he can separate players from the puck. Looks like a pretty solid acquisition by Murray so far.

Columbus' defensive group last season was a lot better than most people think. Nikitin and Tyutin are quietly a very very effective top pairing, and Wisniewski while overpaid is still a very good defenseman.

It was mostly their goaltending that was awful last season.

Fun reading here.

I liked the trade the moment I heard about it, but he is even impressing me.

This. Finally, the lockout is over so the on-ice play will speak for itself. We are not even close to be in the bad shape some were talking about. And Lundin is going to get back too

Columbus has been an horrible team most of Methot's time there

Just refer as to how our players looked in 2010-11 with the Sens...

It's also a question of opportunity. Now Metaux has a big one.

Currently, it seems a deal in which both clubs are dealing from a position of relative strength, meeting each other's needs. Given the ease with which teams tend to find wingers, as opposed to steady defencemen, there may be a slight edge for the Sens in this swap.

Far from the most, I'm sure. Presumably because you thought about what you were going to type before you typed it...

Ya but many were multi-quotes

I just read back my posts and yeah I took some time to inject much needed insight (well IMO at least ). Looks like I'm not THAT crazy

And yeah, many people looked silly. Formed their opinions too fast, based on nothing.

At the time of the trade, one objection was why you'd let Kuba go and be forced to trade an asset (Foligno) to replace him. If you consider Latendresse as Foligno's replacement (possibly debatable), this is what we have now:

Methot + Latendresse + $$$ vs Kuba + Foligno

So instead of re-signing Kuba as a FA, we replaced him with Methot and replaced Foligno with a FA. Probably a richer team could have made a bigger upgrade in FA, but if you consider the cost saving here, the trade-off doesn't look too bad on paper (for now).

Not really. Before last year's collapse Methot was a solid fairly young middle pairing guy on Columbus with some upside. According to many sources, Murray tried to get him before and Howson(for once) wisely declined.

He was never a bottom pairing d-man. He was 5th in TOI because they got two guys who played well with James Wizniewski and Fedor Tyutin when Methot was injured. He was stuck with John Moore for awhile, which didnt help his stats at all. He didnt get points, but most of the team except Fedor Tyutin had terrible seasons as well.

Almost has half the point total (3) that he had for the whole season last year (7).

This is what happens, when you play with Erik Karlsson and the Ottawa Senators. Really though, Marc Methot has not been THAT good.

It's amazing to think about how our blueline would look right now if Murray didn't do that trade.

Phillips - Karlsson
Wier - Gonch
Boro - Benoit

Karlsson, two old guys, and three other dudes who have a combined 18 games of NHL experience.
