How is he shirking (the word you're looking for) his responsibilities? His job is to help the team win and it's silly to think that him doing what he's best at somehow compromises that.
Joe is one of the best ever because of exactly what he showed on that first goal in Calgary. He was completely covered and STILL got the puck to Patty. Everyone knows what Joe is going to try to do and he still is near the top of the league in assists every year. Patty is a better goalscorer than he is. There is nothing at all wrong with getting him the puck.
No one on the bottom six is in the same sentence as Gretzky and Lemieux for
anything, so that's a non-comparison. Heck no one on the team other than Joe is in the same sentence as those two for anything. So yeah, let him do what he has the talent to do on a historic level.
