Gomez has become the poster boy for bad long term signings. That must have weighed on his play the last couple of years. A fresh start with low expectations is what he needs. However, he needs to prove that he still has the desire to compete and contribute to a team.

Gomez is simply one of those nice guys who can't bear the high-pressured environment of the hockey Mecca IMHO.

As others have already said, this is a good signing. Gomez may not be the dominant player he used to be, but he's still a fast skater who can pass remarkably well and get the puck through the neutral zone. The Sharks struggled with their zone entries at times last season and this could help. Plus it gives them some depth in their bottom six and allows them to roll three scoring lines if they so choose. Galiardi - Gomez - Wingels is actually a very solid third line that could potentially provide some offense. And if Gomez sucks? Bench him. They have other options and they're only paying the guy $700k for one year.

Nothing to lose here. Hopefully he can turn it around, I hope he finds a spot from the 3rd line.

Hope he rips it up and trolls Montreal for throwing him away.

He threw himself away. If he does find his game I think everyone in Montreal will be happy for him too.

Gomez is going to a much more appealing situation in San Jose than Calgary. Being an American, he's probably happy going back to a US team in a much smaller hockey market than Montreal and even New York before it. San Jose is also projected by many to be better than the Flames this year. And San Jose doesn't experience -20 and worse weather in the winter...

Even if Calgary was going to try and sign him, I doubt Gomez would have been interested.

He's an Alaskan.

Also hockey = winter = cold. It has no business in the south.

U know SJ is north Cal not south Cal correct?

Can't wait to see him on a line with galiardi. I really think TJ is turning back into that player from the Colorado playoffs. Having a speedy set up man with him may be just what the doctor ordered.

The way he played for us... I'm glad we freed up over 7 million cap space.

He can go be a 2 PPG player for SJ for all I care, but the way he played for Montreal was absolutely brutal.

So Washington is too far south for hockey? Look at a map bro, Cali is a big state.

I'm pretty sure he meant "south" as relative to Canada, so the entire US is "south". He was just poking fun anyway.

Signing a 33 year older to replace a 35 year old makes them a lot older?

Good. While Gomez rarely scored, he would still give the Bruins fits and create great opportunities for the Scabs to score. Smaller players seem to give the Bruins hell: Derek Roy, Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez etc.

What ? He's been completely useless for three years, there is absolutely not a single chance that he would've turned it around and started producing out of nowhere.

If he does well in San Jose, I'm happy for him, but that would've never happened in Montreal.

I think he'll bounce back a bit. 8 goals 30 points in a complementary role.
