Just caught up on the Iginla situation. Wow, not that he was traded, but how it went down. That HUGE round the world trade Eklund was referring to is almost certainly Ovechkin to LA by the way. Not saying it's even likely to happen, it's Eklund.

That would make HF goes crazy if that happened.

I'm talking internal consistency in what he's said. It's a trade that would be heard round the world. Martin St. Louis isn't that. Yeah, he's been a Hart winner but he's a much older player now. Definitely wouldn't be shockwaves around the world kind of trade. Also, he tweeted (was scrolling through my twitter feed to see how the Iginla thing went down) "Besides ... LA has their heart set on a different superstar power forward." Clearly Eklund doesn't mean Martin St. Louis.

There's just no other player who feasibly gets moved who fits "superstar power forward" and would be "heard around the world."

I'm not in any way suggesting Eklund is right, merely deciphering his prediction.

They say that The Pens gave up their 1st Rounder, plus the rights to Ken Agostino (5th round forward) and RW Ben Hanowski (3rd Rounder). Not very impressive-and, seemingly, no better than Boston(probably worse-as they'll likely win The Stanley Cup-andhave the LAST choice in 2013 draft).

Agostino, 20, was a fifth-round pick of the Penguins in the 2010 NHL Draft. The junior forward has a career-high 15 goals and 37 points for Yale this season

Hanowski, a 22-year-old right wing, was a third-round pick in the 2009 Draft. He just finished his senior season with St. Cloud State, where he scored 62 goals and 111 points in four years.
Cal and Gary got fleeced by the Penguins for what could be the 30th pick in 2013 and 2 marginal college forwards. Let the Fire sale in Calgary begin!

I just couldn't imagine what would be given up from LA to obtain Ovechkin for the trade to be worth it.

Yeah I haven't spent any time thinking about that, because it's Eklund. But I do feel fairly confident this is what he's teasing.

The irony about the Pens situation is their defense is still the same and their goalie is still the same as last year. Adding Douglas Murray is like adding a negative. If they have a similar playoff defense/goaltending meltdown it will be the funniest thing that has happened in the NHL in at least a decade.

I get it now, I think he meant they had a Blues-like meltdown when they botched that up. At first glance I thought they were talking about the Blues melting down on TSN.

NYR adds Mats Zuccarello for the remainder of the season.

I'm still at a complete loss why we haven't added Lehterä.

He's not a current upgrade over Sobotka and I don't think we can yet anyway with his contract situation.

As a 3rd line center Lehtera is an upgrade over Sobotka. As much as we all love Sobotka, he plays better playing on an energy/4th line role with great PK time. I don't think his style of play compliments Frank's and Perry's style of play.

Yes, but right now someone who has never played in the NHL would not be an upgrade.

We can sign him, we either didn't bother trying or weren't aggressive enough.

We don't know if he is or isn't an upgrade over Sobotka. He is a playmaking centre, something we don't have. Even if he wasn't, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to have him signed for the remainder of this short season, limit the financial payout to him while we get a damn good look of what he is and isn't. Everything seems to point to us wanting to add him to our roster in he future, which if we do in the future will likely have him pencilled in as a full time roster player. That didn't need to be the case this season.

He'd basically be a waste of money and roster space thus season, both of which we don't have a lot of. The earliest he could come over is end of April I believe.

3 rookie forwards is a lot, especially considering 2 are coming from Europe with almost no NA experience.

Put Steen back at center, and either Sobi on the wing or centering Porter and Reaves on the 4th line (and put Schwartz back in top 9).

Yeah I thought April 30/May 1 was the day he could come over.

Put me in the camp of there being no way he'd step in and be a Sobotka upgrade at the moment. Sobotka's been excellent on that line, actually.

I didn't mean he could just be slotted into the lineup right away. But signing him or at least bringing him over to practice wouldn't hurt the team at all.

He can't activate his opt-out until the end of April. There is no way Sibir would have forced him to wait until then if we had asked him to be released early. Why in the world would they burn bridges with a quality player that they know is leaving anyway?

We have plenty of space to add salary this season, and it isn't like his pro-rated salary would have been that much anyway. Roster spots weren't such an issue when we should have been looking to add him, and they will be irrelevant in a week anyway.

As I've said before, he isn't the answer to problems this season, but it was an opportunity. It would have given him adjustment time and given us a non-committal long, detailed look at someone who could fill a need from next season onwards. Maybe he could have played a part this season, but even if he couldn't there was a lot of value in getting him over.
