Thread for recommendations for modern indie and rock bands that aren't generally known (doesn't mean that they have to be obscure). We all know the popular ones....The National, Arctic Monkeys, Keane, Muse, Sigur Ros, The Hives, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Strokes, Blur, Metric, Travis, Radiohead, St. Vincent, etc and all the older ones...Talking Heads, Joy Division, Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth etc etc etc so no need for those.
I'm talking about stuff like Hey Rosetta, Joy Formidable, kent (well they're the most well known band in Sweden but not outside of there I guess), Jezabels, Howling Bells, Idlewild, Telekinesis, Wintersleep, Blood Red Shoes, Frightened Rabbit, etc. People have heard of these but they all fly under the radar.
Btw I haven't listened to half the bands above, just trying to make the point and get some recommendations going for established bands that have released decent music in the past and have a record deal or something so that they'll release music again and not disappear overnight. Yeah I know, subjective criteria.
I'll start off with two, The Phantom Band from Scotland, and Two Hours Traffic from PEI. Neither are anything special but they make nice simple music.
Patrick Watson
Sam Roberts
Foals - aren't really that well known or popular in NA.
Lotus Plaza
The Middle East
Matthew Dear
St. Lucia
Valleys
The Helio Sequence
Here is a band that I just started listening to earlier today. Mandroid Echostar. They're recommended for fans of Protest The Hero, Children of Nova, Closure In Moscow, Coheed and Cambria, etc...
They only have a 4-song, self-titled EP that they released in 2012. It's really good.
Willie Stratton (blatant plug for a guy I went to high school with.. shameless, I know)
Bishop Allen
Of Montreal
The Thermals
Devendra Banhart
Mother Mother
Reverend and the Makers

http://www.theindierockplaylist.com .. They put out a new playlist of about 100 songs each month.. I've found a lot of good bands through it!! If anyone goes to it and finds anything they like, post the band(s) in here for all!!
They are a very famous band, but not so famous here in the west. Atleast outside the animeculture. They have become quite popular through having their songs in several hit animes, but they have many other amazing songs too. It can suck that you dont understand the lead singer, but the music is just soo good.
Don't really know how popular they are but one of my favorite bands, Spoon.
I don't think Spoon's fan base is very big but they're very well-known in rock because they've been around for so long. They seem like a good band, I'd listen to them if it weren't for the singer's voice.
This is Yuck, anyone who liked 90s indie will love this. They released a debut album in 2011 which was fairly good:

Totally understand the vocals part. Same thing is what turned my brother off from them.
The Phantom Band song from the OP was good, going to check them out.

I actually got a Weakerthans album and have been meaning to listen to them but they never grew on me because the whole thing sounded alike.
I'll mention a couple, I'd assume most here know The Boxer Rebellion? Really good 2nd album, avg 3rd one, and meh 1st one but they have good potential. And don't hear much about Irish bands but this one is called Codes, their debut album was really nice. Anyone who likes Keane or Travis or Killers type bands would enjoy it.
