Hagelin vs. Helm

Who do you take? (If Helm was healthy)

Both of them play like their skates are on fire.

I've always been impressed by Helm. Hagelin's pretty awesome too but I'll go with Helm.

Hagelin is already a 1st line player, so I'll choose him.

Hagelin...I think he has higher scoring ability. Depends on what you want from the player though.

Nothing against you personally, but these statements are so over-generic and usually provide zero insight to the player.

Burrows plays on the Canucks first line most of the time - is he a "first line player"? Does that make him better than Pavelski, a player who is very, very good, but not a first liner in San Jose?

Hagelin plays Left Wing. Is he on the first line because he's the best LW on the Rangers? Is it because he's genuinely a top-line talent? Is he a top-6 forward that moves around the lineup? Saying he's a "1st line player" doesn't really mean anything..

He's 4th in ES TOI/G, 5th in TOI/G, and 6th in shifts/game (among Ranger forwards). That doesn't say "1st line player" to me.

Hagelin is one the best players on a Rangers team that has its share of good players. Yesterday Tavares was his usual beast self, but IMO Hagelin matched him. Had 2 points, but created havoc and offense almost every time he was on the ice. Looked utterly dominant. Granted that was BY FAR the best game of his career, it's not like he plays like this every game. However, he hit a wall last year and had a poor playoff. Also had a poor start to this year. However, other than that he has brought it every game.

Playing on a first line under a coach who likes to balance lines doesn't make you a first line forward. He may be someday, but right now he's isn't a first line talent despite who he lines up next to.

I agree, Hagelin is certainly the more skilled player offensively, but it comes down to team needs.

I personally take Helm on the Wings because I think he's a more valuable player considering everything he can do in a game and the current make up of the roster.

If its a rebuilding team probably Hagelin; he's younger and has more offensive upside.

OT - I'd love to see these guys race.

It depends what your looking for.

Hagelin definitely brings a lot more to the table offensively. Idk about his defensive game. Can't say much about him since I don't watch the Rags much.

Helm is an awesome third-line center. Won't give you more than 30-or-so points but is good defensively and wreaks havoc on the forecheck and PK.

Being a Wings fan and watching the team with and without Helm, it's unbelievable the difference he makes. He may only be a third-line center his entire career here in Detroit, but the kid is one of our core players. He consistently has a larger impact on the game than most of our top-six forwards besides Pavs and Hank.

I think its obvious who I'm voting for

Sounds very much like Hags. Seriously, if you didn't say 3rd line center I'd think you were talking about Hags. I wish yesterday's game was on national tv so that people could see Hagelin play the best game of his young career. I was floored at how good he looked.

First, saying that Hagelin is a 1st line player while Helm is not, is a bit misleading. He's a 2nd line talent playing in a very balanced system. Granted, he is better than Helm offensively.

I take Helm (and I am a Wings fan) because he's the most important player in our bottom six. His presence makes the entire team more cohesive, and I believe that Helm is more valuable to the Wings system than Hagelin would be in his place.

But if I were a Rangers fan, Hagelin is probably better suited for my team. The Rangers seem much more balanced and have a deeper defense, so you can afford to put a Hagelin/Helm on the top two lines.

I'm not going to vote on this one, because I don't think there's an answer that would be right for every team.

I found some stats about the relative importance of Helm to the Wings:

With Helm:
GF/60: 2.99
GA/60: 2.38

Without Helm (24 game sample size, but still):
GF/60: 2.25
GA/60: 2.75

Lol'd seeing a Rangers fan thinking that Hagelin is the next Zetterberg.

He has not hands...at all.

But I'd still take him over Helm.

I will say I appreciate the fact that you said "a Rangers fan" and not "Rangers fans". But yeah, everyone pretty much disagreed with him. He surprises with a really nice shot once in a while, but most of his goals are hard working goals.

Yeah, I'm not going to generalize a fanbase because 1 poster think's he's going to be a star, PPG+ forward.

But you're right, most of his goals are from him busting his ass when he's on the ice.

who said that? That's a stupid statement, and I should know. I'm a fellow swede and a Rangers fan... Hagelin is really good and dynamic but Zetterberg >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hags.

Hagelin. Better scorer. Better defensive player. No-brainer in my view. Though Helm is a very useful player too.

Hagelin pretty easily.

He's one of about 4 or 5 people in the Rangers organization that I'm not willing to throw off of the Empire State Building. That has to count for something.
