Rules regarding assignment of players to AHL vs CHL

Can someone explain the rules regarding when a team can assign a player to their AHL affliate rather than having to send them back to their CHL team? I thought it was if they didn't turn 20 in the calander year of the season start they had to be assigned to the CHL. But Nugent-Hopkins played in the AHL and only turns 20 this year. Wondering cause a number of players are on a 5 game "tryout"

Rules are basically unchanged from previous CBA (from skim of MOU).

CHL players "trying out" can play up to 5 games (before being returned) without burning a year on their contract. (Regular 82 game season it's 9 games; shortened to 5 this season.)

Nominally 18 and 19 year olds must be reassigned to CHL if they aren't in NHL. (There was an exception for RNH during lockout so he played in AHL.)

If a player is drafted by an NHL team from a Major Junior league, then said player is not eligible to play in the AHL until the age of 20. For the purposes of determining age, is it age as of Sept 15 of that season or age as of Dec 31?

Had to turn 20 by Dec 31st of the season.

*Or have completed four seasons in the CHL.
