Where does Corey Perry lives? I don't know if it's Anaheim but an educated guess would be somwhere in California. Which is far more than just 4hrs away from Montreal.
That's the point. The trade can be made pending a contract extension. You don't let a player like Perry go to UFA just hoping to get him. You try to trade for him before and sign him to an extension. We may not be challenging in the next 2 years but when someone that fills such a glaring hole for you becomes available, you go for it. He'd be a huge piece for our future.
Not if that means creating another glaring hole. Which trading Subban would.
Perry will not even consider going there, he will not want to deal with the MTL media, and the constant fan recognition and pestering @huesy
I'm going to say it's unlikely that he signs in MTL as a UFA, but no one here knows for certain. He may decide that MTL has all it needs this offseason (again, crazier things have happened)
But, MTL trading for a rental? that's just horrible asset management and a great way to get a newly minted GM fired...or lynched on St-Catherine St.

They aren't contending this year, with or without Perry. And they have virtually no chance of re-signing him, unless they get rid of Subban.
Look at their Cap numbers for next year...they have only $11M available, not including Subban. And they need at least 5 more players. Even if they buyout another player, they cannot afford to give Perry the $7M+ in addition to $5-7M for Subban.
My guess is Perry will go to Pittsburgh at the deadline and then sign somewhere in the East on July 1.
Pure speculation and wild guess but I'm going to go with Boston.
By go some where you mean sign a multi year deal in Pittsburgh... Then you are right!
Dupuis - Crosby - Perry
Kunitz - Malkin - Neal
Other than Dupuis still being used... I love that top 6.

I'm willing to bet that Perry would never sign a deal with Habs.
The team is going in the wrong direction, Perry has zero ties to Montreal, Perry is not a player seeking media attention etc.
Nope, just doesn't see that happening.
This is the only thing that is wrong in your post. While everything else I totally agree with, the habs are heading in a great direction considering the prospects/good young players they have at every position.

What I meant was that Habs are not going to be any sort of contenders in the next 2-3 years. That's my personal opinion of course.
While they might have the right direction, they have just started the journey and that journey is filled with question marks and unexpected problems. Happens to all teams at that point of rebuilding process.
Montreal has one of the best cores for longterm success with Galchenyuk, Price, Subban, Pacioretty, Gorges, Beauilieu Tinordi and Kristo.
Three prospects who have yet to make the NHL. Also, from what I've heard, Kristo looks like a major boom or bust. You might as well call Collberg and Thrower "core" players as well. Even Gally is a huge stretch, considering he only just made the team, and even that isn't necessarily for sure. Although true, he will be a major part of our team going forward.

Gomez will be off the books. That's 7m right there. Perry won't fetch much more than 7m/year.
Habs aren't in the position to trade for a rental player. Habs also aren't in the cap position to sign him at a UFA-premium-convince-him-to-come-to-a-non-contender-price. Sooo... Habs aren't getting Perry. My personal guarantee.
If we don't get him, it will be our GMs fault. #FireBergevin here we come!

No because I've followed his career closely and because that's what people who know him have said! has nothing to do whether MTL could be good in the future or not
