In a stunning new twist on the Sacramento Kings saga, a group including the new owner of Downtown Plaza is proposing to buy the team and build a $400 million arena on the site of the troubled shopping center.

Boy, Stern can NOT be happy about this. There was a team in Seattle as early as next season. And now... poof!

Well the layout looks like downtown Sacramento, so it's possible.

It could also be an older one from last year when a new arena was in play.

Or possibly Bettman for that matter. Without the NBA team in Seattle, the arena can't break ground. Won't be available as landing spot for a while.

$400 million? Isn't the Seattle group offering more? And isn't it up to the Maloofs who to sell to?

As much as I want an arena in Seattle Id hate to see Sacramento lose their NBA team. Their fans really do not deserve that.

Yea KJ thinks cause local buyer doesn't have to pay back debt right away it'll be cheaper than to sell to hansen who will move to seattle.

525 vs 450 is what i heard.

If at all. Hansen has 5 years to get a NBA team or poof no arena plan. Which was a STUPID thing to make a team a requirement. So i guess i'll never see NHL in Seattle. Might as well eventually get ice center.

Stern won't be involved after 02/01/14, anyway, Pyro, that's his retirement date, the same comments he has consistently made about New Orleans, the Sonics transfer to OKC, AND now Sacramento HAVE been consistent, if there's a sale of a franchise and an arena in place or forthcoming (as Seattle IS w/ Hansen et all), JUST like any sale of a franchise, a proposal must be forwarded to each league's BOG, even to relocate or move a franchise, just as Hansen might do if he had completed a MOU w/ the Maloofs, the NBA would've had to approve that, just as they did w/ Clay Bennett to take the Sonics to OKC.... REMEMBER, Stern's issue has been Key Arena as a permanent home for a new Sonics franchise....

same goes for Bettman, Selig, or other leaders of any NA Pro Sports League.

if Bettman hadn't been involved w/ saving Buffalo, after the Rigas implosion, Pyro, and finding Golisano to stabilize the Sabres to turn it over to Pegula, would there be a Sabres franchise today?

Yeah, pretty much. If Seattle's group is offering more than a Sacramento group by a significant margin, then not seeing the Maloofs deciding to be loyal to the locals and sell the team on the "cheap" to keep the Kings in market. They can suggest $400 million arena plans, but if they don't also offer the Maloofs around a half billion dollars as well, it won't matter.

Also, that article's mostly garbage when talking about the past. A local group making a bid wasn't the reason why they didn't move to Anaheim a year or two ago, it was opposition from the Lakers and Clippers that killed it.

The fate of the Coyotes somehow seem tied to this Sacramento/Seattle bargaining in terms of a package deal.

It's my gut feeling that this is one of those promises that, once the arena actually happens, the owners get their NBA team and there's suddenly excuses as to why the NHL can't come in. It may be vaporware, or it's a promise the NBA owner makes only to find that the market doesn't really want to pay them rent.

The caveat: sharing happens in the larger markets because that's where the rent is worth paying. Seattle isn't there, but it's gaining enough for my stance to be debatable.

Only reason why we never had a team in the first place was due to the ARENA. The NHL wants a team here. Enough of the idea that the market doesn't really want to pay rent.

Of course. Sports is men playing kids games for money. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who just don't care.

That won't happen. The contract with the city of seattle says there has to be both.

Well I know NOTHING about any of this, it's all gibberish to me. I only became a Sabres fan this offseason.

No it doesn't. The contract says we need a NBA team to get the arena built and adjusted the finances accordingly. If Hansen gets NBA then its another 80m in public bonds. NBA only Hansen is on the hook for the 80m.
