Do you guys think that either Rinne or Ellis have a shot at taking the #1 job from Mason this season? Who has looked the best in pre-season?
Mason by a mile. THen Rinne and Ellis in a dog fight. Edge to Rinne. The only way Rinne or Ellis starts is if Mason ends up like the limbless knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail and even then he will be screaming it's only a flesh wound.
It will be a very interesting decision who they send down between Rinne and Ellis.
They have discussed the option of rotating them over 2-3 week stints with the big club to keep both playing stretches of games in Milwaukee as there role behind Mason [barring injury to him of course] will be limited to probably back to back games. Mason is expected to get 60-65 games....and no, there is no chance of one of them unseating Mason for the #1 job.
When the decision comes to send one of them down, a few factors will come into play for Poile.
First - Ellis has to clear waivers and Rinne does not.
Second - Who is playing better [right now it is fairly equal].
Third - What other goalies are on the waiver wire when the intial send down occurs.
Fourth - What goalie injuries might have recently occured in the NHL.
That all being said, I think Ellis will get sent down first.
You would anticipate few if any teams would be willing to claim him off waivers and put him directly on their NHL roster right as everybody is cutting down out of training camp.
That would allow one free send down later of Rinne, with Ellis immune from call-up waivers. If Ellis would, then later be sent down.....this is when we would be at greatest chance to lose him....you would think Poile would try to do this when another goalie might have just been claimed on waivers [like we did on Leighton last year]...then try to put him through as you would think that the first claim would have most likely been one of the few teams needing to put one on their roster.
Anyway...interesting to see how this indeed plays out...
