I think Ottawa would accept a 2nd, but his value is only that of a 3rd or a decent prospect. He's the type of guy who has more value to the Sens, then he would on the market plus he's only a sophomore.
I honestly think Greening-Smith-Neil will be one of the top shutdown 3rd lines in the NHL relatively soon.
It's not a shutdown line. It's just a very good "energy line". Think a fourth line on steroids.
Shutdown lines are expected to play against other teams' top offensive players and prevent them from scoring. GSN is expected to play against 2nd and 3rd lines, but demolish them physically and create some momentum for whoever is on next.
as for greening being available, yes. He probably is. Hoffman and DD can come up and replace him, obviously they wont be as good, but they can fill his role. For now, he is being kept around as insurance if silfverberg or latendresse dont perform. In order to trade him, ottawa would need a defensive upgrade, given that they only have 4 experienced NHL dmen right now and two of them are really old. Looking at the NYR roster realistically, that means greening+ for MDZ or Sauer (is he healthy yet?). If you want to go futures, it's greening+ for skjei or mcilrath, which is obviously prohibitive to the rangers.

Here are the picks Ottawa made from 2001 to 2005 in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

I would do a 2nd for Greening.

Greening commands value, but MDZ/Hagelin/1st or 1st pick value is too much.
someone said Hjarmallson
Boyle + x for Hjarmallson, Olsen + Y
Hjarmallson + Eminger + Anderson
for
Greening + pick
Calle Anderson = young potential
Hjar. + Em. = serviceable now
Can throw in a defensive checking type guy, Kris Newbury, for 4th line for free. Won't give any offense or creativity, but might work for Sens on bottom 3.
Would you trade Greening for all of them combined let alone one of them?
Since Murray started drafting in 2008, our 2nds and 3rds have been: Patrick Wiercioch (nhl), Zack Smith (nhl), Jakob Silfverberg (nhl), Robin Lehner (nhl ready), Jacob Culek (bust), Shane Prince, Jarrod Maidens, and Chris Dreiger.
err.....greening had almost 40pts and 20 goals in his first full season in the NHL.
he's big, freakishly strong, extremely fast, and a great team guy that can play anywhere from the 1st to 4th line effectively.
why is it that he'd available? or that we would take a 2nd rounder for him?
most 1st rounders dont turn out to be Greening....
I would rather have a right handed defenseman instead, could we talk about what would be needed for Staal than MDZ?
They're both left-handed.
And they just wouldn't be on the table for Greening.
We're looking more so for a spark on our third line who might occasionally play on the second. MDZ is our lone puck moving defenseman and is a top 4 player for us. Staal is a top pairing shutdown guy and is even more off the table.
I'm not opposed to moving either of them, but any deal we make has to make our team better now. There's no point for us in making a deal just for the sake of it.

Fully agree, it makes no sense for the Sens to trade him, especially since he's being paid less than a million. He might be available next year at the deadline if the Sens are out of it since he'll be a UFA, but I think he'll re-sign and play on the team for a long time.
As stated before, only a healthy Michael Sauer makes the conversation possible and since he's yet to even practice, it's not. Girardi, McDonagh, MDZ, and Staal are untouchable.
If Stu Bickel and a 2nd doesn't get it done. It's not getting done.
Not that he's worth a top 4 d man because he isnt but like many others have stated there is no point in moving him unless thats the return. I think his value is underated around here, he is a very versitile, complete player with a very specific skill set that isnt very common. He is gigantic, skate like the wind has great defensive instincts and can fill in on a scoring line if he has to. If he had better hands he would probably be untouchable.

Agreed. Filatov comes to mind.

Agree as well & hope so.
IMO there are a couple of forward positions where the Sens can improve & it doesn't include moving Greening because there are weaker links on the roster. Our prospect depth will eventually improve those forwards even as soon as this yr or next. Zibanejad & Stone will eventually replace Regin & Condra & we still have some good prospects as injury callups in Da Costa, Grant, DD & Hoffman & Noesen & Puemple coming. Daugavins could be gone at any time but certainly at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Stralman is righty I THINK, that most closely fits the bill. That leaves us thinner at D, esp. righty D to bolster NY's F.
As to "Staal" the closest comparable, righty would be Girardi.
He would, like Staal, require maybe not massive, but certainly serious, premium overcompensation, more than just Greening.
