AV is notorious for letting the players play, and not overcoaching them. It's very possible that they were hoping Ballard would rely on his experience, and play a solid all-around game. Where he's used to being one of the key offensive contributors.
Bowness is responsible for coaching Ballard not AV.

So to me, it really doesn't matter if his 'on ice SV%' drops and a few more goals go in here and there while he's on the ice...so long as when i watch the guy in game...he's maintaining the same improved standard of play.
Yeah, but his improved play is clearly there in his numbers as well. Last year he was 2nd worst among the Canucks defense in Corsi. Basically he and Alberts were the only defensemen to be outshot while on the ice despite playing against trash opponents. The year before was the same story where he and Alberts were at the bottom of the heap with absolutely terrible numbers given the types of players they were up against. This year on the other hand, Tanev and Ballard are #1 and #2 on the team in Corsi.

Yes, taking a convoluted stat and using it as a proxy for the overall quality of a player is stupid, but eschewing useful information is similarly ignorant. Watching the players combined with looking at their underlying numbers to give a deeper understanding will always win out over just watching them. There's a reason that organizations worth hundreds of millions of dollars track this kind of stuff for their own use.

Fair enough, but it doesn't really change my comment that much. Ballard, at no point in his career, has had to play a simple, efficient, defense first game. Since junior hockey, in pretty much every season, he's been "the man" offensively. He scored almost immediately at every level he played, and always had a green light, with other guys covering him. It's the first time he was expected to be a small piece in a large puzzle, and it was more foreign to him than it should have been for a 7 year NHL veteran.

Really starting to like Ballard so far this season. I'm going to be a little sad to see him go...

They can buy him out and re-sign him, right?

So...the way he's playing right now (one of our top d by all accounts), isn't he worth what was given up for him?
Grabner - highly likely he would be a doghouse fixture at best here..can't see him cracking the top 9
Bernier - plug
Howden - would probably be one of the top 3-5 prospects in our system? haven't followed him a whole lot to be honest

I think the next step for Ballard (which might be too much for him) would be to get up over the 20 min TOI mark. If he could do that there's no chance he'd be in the mix for a buyout, he'd have pretty solid trade value.

I don't think he was ever in the mix for a buyout. People that mentioned him at a buyout candidate seriously overrate the depth of quality Dmen around the league. It's just not there. Even right now, Ballard could be a really good fit in places like OTT and NYI.

There are always teams on the hunt for Dmen, especially those that have had _careers_ like Ballard.

As to your point about worth -- He's worth the pieces given up, but he isn't worth what it cost the Canucks while trying to get him up to speed. The 4m salary allocated to him during the time he was recovering could have been better spent elsewhere...

True. The Canucks (Gillis) made a good call on his character and ability imo but there is always a human element involved. For whatever reason Ballard lost his confidence and then his game. Gillis salvages the deal by helping Ballard rebuild both and come out an even better player imo. If Ballard can manage to build on this start teams are around the league are going to notice and the price for top 4 defensemen is as high as ever. Neal for Gologoski... Schenn for JVR... dare to dream.

nope, as far as I know

Daniel, Kesler, Malhotra, and Bieksa were the "A"s

Malhotra is replaced by Burrows and Ballard is replacing Bieksa/Kesler. Don't know past that

Well Hank chose the others, maybe he was the one to give Ballard the "A" as well?

I don't think AV bothered with it.

Ballard with an A makes sense, I've heard he's pretty good in the room. With Kesler, Malhotra and Bieksa all out, Canucks are desperately short on Alternates.

I've heard he's one of those goofballs in the room who everyone loves. You can just see his sense of humour when he does interviews.

You heard right:

http://canucks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=549623

I was a little confused as to him getting an A, but than I remembered the injuries, Bieksa and Kesler are easily above him but not playing, and after Daniel, Hamhuis, and Burrrows there really isn't any options. Beside those three, there's only really Edler who you could make a case for, and he really isn't very vocal.

In my moment of confusion, I was hoping it was Henriks way of calling out the coaching, by giving an A to a player the coaching staff regularly benches and could really help the offence if let loose a bit.

I dont think Ballard is wearing the right jersey. There is another picture of him straight on, with no 'A'

C- Hank
A- Dank,Burr, Kes, Juice

Manny and Ballard do not have them
