Wayne Gretzky: Generational Judge of Talent

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=6...d=nhl:topheads

Quote:
My favorite player over the last 10 years has been [Henrik] Zetterberg. I think Zetterberg is the best player in the game [at his age]. He's been so physically beat up from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Olympics, all that goes with that, but he's just very special. I think he's the best Swedish player they've ever put into the National Hockey League, and there has been a lot of great ones, from [Borje] Salming to [Nicklas] Lidstrom.
Zetterberg over Lidstrom? Over Forsberg? That seems a little... out there, does it not? and I say this as a Wings fan.

Every year Gretzky says someone is the greatest. This is nothing new. He uses his power in hockey to build up players by saying glowing reports about them. Gretzky is one of the last people I would ask for an unbiased opinion of a player.

What's confusing though is he just got done saying
Quote:
"I think [Sidney] Crosby is the best player and he's just really fun to watch.
in the paragraph before it. So Crosby is the best player, but Zetterberg is the best player for his age. I guess that's like the Senior Hart Trophy or something. You get that as an old guy.

Sound like a Michael Jordan / Kwaamaay Brown situation.

Gretzky has zero credibility with me after he phoned Justin Schultz to tell him to sign with the Oilers. Jerk.

Meh, I thought everyone learned to take what Gretzky says with a grain of salt?

It reminds me of Guy Lafleur in Quebec. Guy has made ridiculous statements, but everyone respect him anyways. So just take Gretzky with a grain of salt and move on

He also had some ridiculously outlandish things to say about Kyle Turris in that article, even while admitting bias since he worked with him in phoenix... it still made me question his judgement...

""The guy that I'm a little biased about, but the guy I think has hockey sense to only Crosby and [Brad] Richards in New York is Kyle Turris. His hockey awareness and hockey sense is close to those two guys, and I consider them to have the best hockey sense in the game today. He's going to fit into that category soon.""

I was like... ummm WHAT??

He's in an awkward situation. What's he supposed to say? Everyone is a scrub and can't touch my records? My former employees are lazy?

He basically has to say everyone is good.

Wayne was a brilliant player, but I thought it was pretty common knowledge that he isn't exactly a brilliant person. Just smile and nod, and be grateful for the memories.

Am i the only one that sees the difference?

He thinks Zetterberg is the best player for his age and that Sid is the best player period.

Age 32 vs Age 25...get it?

Also said Zetterberg was the best Swedish player ever. Better than Lidstrom, Forsberg, ect.

Man some of you guys are critical over nothing.

The guy is basically a politician. He's Wayne Gretzky. He can't say anything bad about anyone, and he has to praise a bunch of players from all over the world.

Some of you slamming him for being a great player but nothing else....yeah you wish you had a millionth of what he has. Of anything.

Those were not Greatzky's top 5 at all. It was EJ Hradek's top 5 segment or whatever silly name they give it, which he does quite often. It consisted of 5 random players currently playing born in January. I don't think they were in any real order. He had Petro as first (or last in the segment) because he wanted to talk to Gretzky about the Blues since the theme from the fantasy camp is the '67 Blues.

Hey! Don't put an end to the Gretzky slamfest! These guys were having fun saying how dumb he is. Too much truth kills a good troll thread.

I never heard Gretzky criticize another player. He always has nice words for them and is full of praise. I'm not so sure that it is meant to be accurate.
