Been a great day for Wings fans today. Other than being happy over Brunner's goal....

- Signed Huskins (For god's sake if he can stay healthy he HAS to be better than Quincey has looked so far)
- Samuelsson tweaks his groin (Surprise!!!) and they call up Nyquist.

Im guessing with this signing they think 2 of Kindl, Colaiacovo or Eriksson could be out for a long period of time. This also means that later on in the year IF everyone is healthy that two of them may have to be sent back down....Lashoff and....

You haven't been watching Wings very closely if you think this happened over 1 offseason.

Which usually meant he'd get creamed along the boards. But he definitely can take a hit. That's for sure.

I can see in the thread that many say he will take the hit to make the play but is this a downfall? Is he a pretty strong guy, or actually injury prone and we just most likely tied our hands even more?

*edit* seriously? i used than instead of then... ffs.
Downfall for him, but it helps the team with the breakout. If a puck is dumped, he'll absorb the hit and pass it to Smith for the breakout. He is pretty injury prone too.
Of course, his style is good for the lower competition and if he has a decent offensive partner. Don't expect him to shut-down any 1st or 2nd liners.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned about Huskins is that he is slow. Stays in position well though. I was actually kinda surprised the Blues didn't keep him around as a number 7.

I wouldn't call him slow. Slow in my mind would be like Holmstrom, Murray, etc. He's an average skater.

Husky is a good soldier and will take a hit to move the puck. Expect car crash moments.

What? Brendan was easily our best d-man in the first game(and overall players), and he wasn't bad last night? He's a puck moving poised rookie in his first NHL year as a full-timer. Who's his partner? Kyle... Quincey. Currently Quincey can't do anything, so if anything Smith is covering HIS ass a lot. You can't throw a rookie someone who hasn't even shown they can play defense at any level so far this season.

You need to chill out. Smith is not going anywhere.

He had one bad outing and his partner Quincey was even worse.

B. Smith
(2012-2013) 32 Games Played 5 goals 15 Assists 20 Points +10

Those are very good defensive numbers, had team in top 3 of conf.

Not very good in the AHL this year?

His highest pt total in the AHL was 34...He played 52 games that year for them. He was on track for more than 34 pts points this year...

Really? Started the season for the Wings, was always going to start for them.
Where do you come off with this notion that he would be sent down?

Wings fans soon will feel what we the Avs fans feel after losing Sakic, Forsberg, Roy, Foote to retirement.

Once Datsyuk retires in couple of years or so, and Lidstrom gone, you guys will start the suffering period of rebuilding.

It's really hard to draft or trade for real star players who you can bring the glory days back with.

As i said, i know this first hand being an Avs fan. Only tough times ahead for Wings fans.

Holland almost might be better off dumping a pick to a team and taking a vet off somebody's hands who's already demoted to the AHL (Ryan Parent, Matt Smaby, Adam Pardy, Tyler Sloan, Jay Leach, Matt Walker, Andreas Lilja, Mike Mottau, Derek Meech)
He cleared waivers this week , he could have been had for free.

Husky is not a bad 6 or 7 d man depending on his partner. He is a little slow but makes up for it with exp. not a bad move by Det considering their situation.

Wings fans are really being obnoxious in their defense of Smith.

Smith has looked like crap. We've known for years about his defensive issues.
Every game I saw him in for Grand Rapids this year, he gave up pucks or let guys skate by him.

While Quincey sucks, anyone who tries to pin Smith's brainfarts on Quincey is being foolish at best, dishonest at worst.

Smith wasn't good last night, he single-handedly gave CBJs two goals which resulted in the game to go to OT, giving them a point that put them further up the standings.

Hopefully that one point doesn't come back to bite the Wings in the butt. CBJs seem better this year and Wings are worse, they don't need to be giving division rival free points.

Blaming Quincey for Smith's stupidity is like blaming the planet Mars because Suter didn't sign with the Wings. It makes no sense. Smith was bad in the AHL this year and it is now translating to the NHL. Smith is going to be 24 in a few days... he needs to start playing like a 24 year old first round draft pick.

You need to understand who Brendan Smith is, and what his identity is. You already admitted that you knew about Smith's defensive game. Every Red Wings has known about this, since the start of his development. We've been able to watch in year in and out become a better offensively minded defense men, it's what he's been developed into. He is a poise puck mover, so when you pair him with kyle quincey... what do you expect out of him? Seriously? You're calling people foolish and dishonest for blaming things on Quincey but it's called for. We know the role Smith plays, but he can't play it if he doesn't have help on the other side. Quincey has been BRUTAL these first two games, which forces Smith out of his element. Give Smith the partner he actually needs, and you'll see what we expect out of him. There's reasons why he is in the Calder talks, and why he held #9 on most list, he's an offensive player. If you sit there and try to critque his defense, you're going to be sadly mistaken and disappointed. So no, no one is being foolish here, you just need to understand the player that Smith is, and what to expect out of him.
