I used to hate the Senators. We had a pretty underrated rivalry with them just like the Canes.
Starting in 96 with that horrible pathetic loss on the last day of the regular season that cost us the last playoff spot in the East. Then we had the series in 98 we lost, the ECF in 03 where we blew a 3-1 lead I think it was in the series, and barely squeaked out a win thanks to Marty and Friesen. Then the 07 series the last one in the Meadowlands.
We had a mini one with the Leafs back in 00-04. The two playoff series, and then the Domi elbow on Niedermayer escalated it. Leafs/Devils games usually were a mess from then to the last lockout. Lots of fights.

The 2003 series against the Sens was one of the best playoff matchups I can remember.

I used to hate the Sens too. I've actually started to like them recently though. Probably my second favorite team to watch in the east.
I'm not a fan of the Leafs either but I think it would be great for hockey if they were finally good again. But it's fun to watch their fans make idiots of themselves on here

I started liking them late last year actually. I hated Alfredsson until last year too. That 03 series was good. I remember Marty giving up a softy very early in the game 7 after someone missed a wide open Ottawa net. I just remember Bill Clement ripping Marty for that goal he gave up. After that I just remember him making big save after big save.

Arvedson...I remember that very well, thinking how could we let this piece of trash score?
I was so on edge that game I muted ESPN after that goal, I couldn't take it anymore. I think I listened to the radio for part of it (with the TV still on) but eventually I muted the end, I don't think I heard the legendary 'NO, NO!' call on Friesen's goal till afterward
Most Sens fans hate the Devils because of that series in '03. Theyhad a phenomenal group that year, and we killed their dream story line. I don't think any Devils really reciprocated the same level of emotional though.
My best buddies are Atlanta (rest in pieces), St.Louis and Buffalo fans. Even though those teams fall in that "don`t mind, don`t care" category, it sure has some affect on me.
Yeah I live in the city, I've been a Sabres mini pack holder for about 4 or 5 years now. Always the two Devils games, and then the rest are whatever is cheapest. It's a really great atmosphere here in Buffalo, we've got the Canadian passion without the annoying Canadian nationalism. And they has a lot of history for a franchise that's never won the Cup.
I've actually gotten lucky, we've had some big moments in Buffalo lately. I got to see Marty tie the shutout record, Kovy's OT winner in our first victory of 2011, and Kovy's first hat trick last year in person. I've seen a few pretty intense shootouts, too.
But yeah, I'm always going to have a soft spot in my heart for the Sabres. I always explain to my friends that I want the Devils to go 82-0 every year and the Sabres to go 78-4 every year.
One of my favorite hockey trips was Devils vs Sabres at the HSBC Center, the Devils spanking the Sabres, massive snowstorm, and drinking and eating wings at Anchor Bar.
I actually enjoy watching the Flyers play more than most teams. Most of my hate is reserved for the NYR.
I respect their toughness, but I dislike it when it crosses the line into straight goonery, which is fairly often.

Fandom brings the neanderthal idiot out of me.
Same here. I think we cannot escape the fact that both fanbases are obsessed with each other. The GMs don't like each other, the coaches don't like each other, the players don't like each other, the fans don't like each other, and I'm sure the peanut vendors don't like each other. Solid hatred for the other side from top to bottom. That's what a rivalry should be.

Haha so you're memory is better than mine on that one! Arvedson! I was thinking it was Alfredsson, but then I remembered it was some scrub! I remember Bill Clement gave it to Marty on that one pretty good. It went 7 hole I think. I remember Clement saying it's a bad goal cause he was square to the shooter or something! I'm pretty sure we missed a wide open net with Lalime down before that, but I forget who it was.
That series had our 2000 ECF vs Philadelphia written all over it. It looked like Ottawa would be the one to come back. Though Friesen scored right around the same time Patty score in game 7 of the 2000 ECF to take a lead. Had to be around 3 minutes left both times.

It really doesnt get much better than that.
The Anchor Bar is for tourists and amateurs, pretty much every bar and pizzeria in Buffalo worth its salt has better wings. If you want REAL Buffalo style wings check out Duff's, JP Fitzgeralds, Pearl Street Bar & Grill, or Bar Bill Tavern. Though all but Pearl Street are outside the city.
Make sure to check out our pizza next time you're in town - I'll put it up against anything NYC or Chicago has to offer. Probably why we have the highest rates of obesity and heart disease in the country. Check out Bella Pizza, Franco's, La Nova, and Buffalo Pizza Company.
Beef on weck too, we have really good beef on weck.
Also, all of the bars here serve Canadian beers like Labbat and Molson at domestic prices.
If you can deal with atrocious sports teams, terrible property values, sub-freezing weather 5 months of the year, unemployment, and crippling depression....Buffalo is actually a decent place to live.

Obviously it was great to clinch a playoff spot last year, but to clinch it against the Canes, knowing they were going home early last year made it more enjoyable for me

It also was nice retribution to do it against Maclean who's on the Canes coaching staff now. He's the reason we missed the playoffs the year before, and it felt fantastic to beat up on his team in their own building on the way to clinching a playoff spot. Especially since I believe he was in Kovy's head the other team we faced them after he was hired. That was the game Kovy put it in the empty net giving Cam Ward credit for the goal.
Hey gang...Jeff O'Connor of DevilsInsiders.com is examining all the unique jerseys at the Prudential Center after every home game this season. In this one, there is an OJ Simpson reference. Yup!

That's because the Devils view the Sens as many people view them(Devils) : Boring.
Over at Devils Insiders, Dave Turner and Jeff O'Connor go over the state of the Devils. Check out episode two of NJ Devils Digest! Thanks for stopping by!
My birthday is March 2nd, which is a Saturday this year. The Devs play at the Sabres on that day. I'm leaning toward taking the road trip...Never been there before.

its a hell of a city man. got a hotel room with 2 of my buddies there in 2011 for a Cage the Elephant show. Let's just say I left there with a lean, mean hangover and stories i cannot ever tell my grandchildren.
