Brown and Rice accuse Callahan of "sabotage"

Callahan issues statement after Rice's claims
Quote:
On Tuesday afternoon, Hall of Famer receiver Jerry Rice, a teammate with Brown on that Raiders team, said on ESPN that he was surprised when Callahan changed the Raiders’ offensive game plan two days before playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the Lombardi Trophy on Jan. 26, 2003. The Bucs went on to win the game 48-21.

"For some reason — and I don't know why — Bill Callahan did not like me," Rice said. "In a way, maybe because he didn't like the Raiders, he decided, ‘Hey look, maybe we should sabotage this a little bit and let Jon Gruden go out and win this one.'"
Here I thought it was just incompitence.

That explains the 48 points they allowed.

Funny, the two of the guys who laid the biggest eggs that day say this.

Brown dropped multiple passes, one of which prompted Dwight Smith to say "Damn Tim, you waited 15 years to do that!?". He finished with one nine-yard catch.

Rice didn't even have a catch until the third quarter when the score was already 34-3.

21 of those points were scored by the Bucs defense.

Wait, I thought it was because they never changed the play calling signals from when Gruden ran the team?

I'm sorry, but what guy is going to lose intentionally to put his buddy over himself? Unless he put money on the game....

Definitely just sour grapes. No way that someone would potentially wreck their career to stick it to a team.

Bad idea to change his game plan so late? Almost assuredly, but if bad decision making was always intentional sabotage then everybody in the league could be classified as a repeat saboteur.

Callahan is not capable of throwing a game on purpose. His teams just get beat big by accident.

I think the fact they lost by so much has more to do with the Bucs defense being one of the all-time best...not sure any game plan Callahan had would work better than no game plan at all.

If players think Bill Callahan was bad, what did they (I realize Rice and Brown weren't on the team at the time but other players) think of Lane Kiffin who might just be the biggest a-hole in football history

This.

I don't think anyone gave the Raiders a chance to win that game. The fact the Raiders scored as many points as they did was a mini miracle.

Bill Callahan being a terrible head football coach is a much simpler explanation.

Right. And if he would have won that one game, he would have been immortalized forever, at least in Oakland.

Rice and Brown are going to have to back this up with some sort of legitimate evidence at some point.

Read this elsewhere, and while in no way do I think he sabotaged the team, it is intriguing that he had a game plan the Bucs never would've expected, and then changed it close to the Super Bowl to one they had been completely preparing for.

Maybe as the game came closer he became less confident with riding Charles Garner in the Super Bowl and decided instead to go with what got him there: The NFL MVP, the greatest receiver to ever play football, and another future hall of fame receiver. Had he stuck with the game plan the cries of sabotage would have been louder, and more legitimate, as it would have also failed, but they would have looked foolish in the process.

I'm not sure Bill Callahan is smart enough to pull it off even if he wanted to.

Speaking of Bill, can someone PLEASE hire him away from the Cowboys?

I'm sure the game plan changed. I'm also sure the change didn't come from Callahan.

I doubt it matters what the gameplan is if the coach on the other sideline knows pretty much everything about your team. It was just a bad matchup for the Raiders.

Probably helps Cris Carter's chances for getting into Canton this year.

The bigger issue than the game plan is that they still had the same audibles from Gruden's tenure.
