Considering we have to wait 2 or 3 years for him to be here, I wonder what the hell our defense would look like.

I truly don't get this infatuation with Gus. He's really not that much better than Gervais. They are pretty much the same player. Only difference is handedness. I find Gus to be terribly overrated around here.

He's only played a few dozen games at the level that matters.

My mind is still fresh from watching him in the NJ series last year. He crumbles when he faces a good forecheck. He can't handle the power of NHL forwards downlow. He's not positionaly good nor does he have an active stick to counter that lack of strength like Timonen does in the defensive zone. Sure he's adept at moving the puck but is he really that much better than Gervais at it? Sure he's mobile but that doesn't mean anything at all. There are other facets of the game he's just weak at and the ones he excels at are just above average. His upside is a bottom pairing defenseman. From the times he's played I've seen no ability where you can say he could reach the level of a top 4 guy. Specifically a #3-4 d-man. That would be putting him on the level of a Mez in terms of potential. He's never shown that.

Gervais is 28 and has almost 400 games under his belt of NHL experience.

Erik Gustafsson is 24 and has 31 games of NHL experience under his belt.

Too compare the 2 players is pretty foolish. Pretty safe to say right now Gervais is what he is. an average to below average #6/7 defender.
Too early to say anything about Gus.

Gus is Swedish. Only a matter of time before he's elite. Duh.

Well spoken, I will ignore sarcasm if there's any of it in your post. Because what you said is a fact! Just hope when he turns elite mode we won't face Cooke

There was a stretch early last yr before injuring his wrist where he was really going and he was getting like 19 min of ice time. In the Pitts series he looked very good positionally and I specifically remember a few occasions where he came away from a one on one puck battle with Malkin with the puck. Now I'm not convinced that he'll be anything more then a 3rd pairing guy but he's def better then any 3rd pairing guy we have available now Plus he can actually give you quality pp minutes. He's still relatively young for a d-man so he can still improve especially with Kimmo here to teach him how to make it as a small guy in this league.

Now confirmed. From Tim P.:
Quote:
Meszaros skating and wearing "no contact" bumble bee jersey
--------------------------------------------------

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=655684

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. – Andrej Meszaros was back skating with his Flyers teammates for the first time Thursday, but cautioned that he’s still a ways away from getting back to game action.

“I feel I am progressing,” he said. “Obviously, I’m not where I want to be, as yet. We’ll see how the next few weeks go.”

And that’s about where he is with his recovery – still 2-to-3 weeks away.

Nevertheless, it was a positive sign for the Flyers that he was back on the ice, even if he was wearing the canary yellow, no-contact practice jersey.

At the very least, Meszaros can keep his conditioning level up to snuff by being able to skate, even if his left shoulder isn’t close to being ready.

The Flyers would like to have him back in the lineup in time for an important stretch of games against the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh and Boston immediately after the Flyers Wives Carnival.

But Meszaros will return when he’s ready, and not before.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” he said. “When we didn’t play with the lockout, I wanted to play games in Europe and it didn’t happen. So the focus was get healthy and try to start the season on time, which I did.

“That was very good for me, but to come out [again] after four games, it’s frustrating and bad luck, I guess. What are you going to do? That’s the way it is. Hockey is a physical sport. Injuries are going to happen. It’s unfortunate to me that this happened back-to-back – the Achilles and the shoulder. I try not to think about it. I try to stay positive and do rehab every day. Maybe it’s a good thing I can get ready right now and get my rehab in for the stretch run.”
-------------------------------------------------

Quote:
On Thursday, Meszaros rejoined his teammates for practice wearing the “no contact” yellow jersey.

He spent about 25 minutes doing drills with teammates after a previous 35-minute workout with a couple coaches and scratched players.

Today represented his third time on the ice. So where is Meszaros in his recovery timeline?

“Tough to say,” he replied. “I feel I am progressing. Obviously, I’m not where I want to be, as yet. We’ll see how the next few weeks go.”

Meszaros injured his left shoulder on Jan. 24 against the Rangers when checked into the boards by the Rangers’ Ryan Callahan at the end of the second period of would become a 2-1 Flyers’ victory.

Scott Hartnell, who has missed the last 10 games since fracturing his big toe on Jan. 22, will visit a foot specialist on Friday for clearance to begin skating. With the doctor's permission, Hartnell could be back as soon as Wednesday in Pittsburgh. He accompanied the Flyers on their Canadian road trip and exercised using a stationary bike . .

Reminds me for some reason of the hype with Jiri Latel back in the day...

Gus is ok and has shown flashes but verdict still out in my book as well..

Man, that show is so frustrating. It seems like nothing happens every episode buts its definitely leading up to something big.

Any idea when he's supposed to see the specialist or when the news of him being cleared might be released?

Thanks

If Hartnell gets permission to skate, he could do so as early as tomorrow (Saturday). As far as his scheduled appointment, specific times are typically kept internal. The usual protocol with injury updates is through Paul Holmgren. If he meets with the media prior to the game, that could be when an update is issued. The team could also release a brief statement with a quote from Holmgren accompanying it.

Every team is different in how they release info, so thanks for the heads up. Here in Vancouver, we have crappy journalists and Gillis is super tight-lipped. We rarely get any info in advance (ie Malhotra).

Always been a big fan of your team, hope you guys can turn it around.

Much of that was borne out of the 2008 GM meetings and the advancement of the terms "upper body" and "lower body" injuries during the regular season. It was standard procedure to use those terms for the playoffs but no such much in the regular season. However, many GMs wanted to be as clandestine as possible in the salary cap world. It was specifically designed to limit the flow of information.

I see a dangerous pattern here:

Gagne- foot injury- traded
Carter- foot injury- traded
JVR- foot inury- traded
Hatnell- foot injury

I prefer the Isles' tactic of using 'overall body soreness', first used for one of the many Dipietro injuries.
