Everyone was so happy a few months ago when an arena deal got "done".

I came on here and said it wasn't over yet... and I got attacked for saying that. Yet here we are.

What's up with that? It was reported on the news the day after the deal got announced that there was still going to be issues a head. No one paid attention when I told them.

Any way, I haven't been keeping track.

Where are we now in the arena negotiations?

Everybody knows this is nowhere.

Gotta laugh at the thread title. It mocks the process. It mocks..

Off topic but things went sour for Seattle's arena aspirations today with the Sacramento Kings looking like they're going to stay put. Seattle's arena deal was contingent on an NBA team moving.

Out of curiosity, why can't the city kill the $21M community rink and scale the the winter garden from it's current $56M? Would this not save a good chunk of money?

They can. I don't know the savings. They could delete some things to cut the costs and do them later, or not at all. It's like buying a house and building the basement and garage later when you have the money.

Its more like not adding the sunroom and a smaller shower and a walkin closet under 800sq/ft. As in this case they will be building around the arena as soon as possible. But the concern with redesigning is they think that any money they will save from cuts will be eaten up in architecture and approval costs from the builders. I predict that with the additional delays the actual costs will put the arena over $500M.

Optics and otherwise a bad idea to not have the community rink. Its the one ode to the community in the whole project, afairc GMCC will be able to use the facility for their teams, public can as well and Oilers want it as a practice rink facility. They should definitely keep it.

Easy to explain - Katz puts in $100 million. Everything else is imaginary - totally backed by taxpayers.

The recent $3 million per year promised by the province through our taxes is only guaranteed for a few years until other votes are required - that $45 million is imaginary.

The CRL money is imaginary - none of the City's crack addict visions has come to fruition for decades. Yet, everything is guaranteed by Mandel & friends - through increased taxes if the imaginary money does not appear.

A billionaire has his elected friend guarantee everything will go perfect at no cost to taxpayers - but subsidized by taxpayers if things fall through.

What could possibly go wrong...

I thought months ago it was said that they'd have to change the design if they want to remove the winter garden. Soundsed like it wasn't an option.

Everything we have read about details is a lie - the arena is paid by taxpayers... 100% except for the 15% paid by Daryl Katz!

Buyer Beware...

Proven by the fact that Katz employees pumping the scam to date are afraid to debate facts!

It's just the wrong political climate to get something like this done. These arenas are more like hand grenades to politicians these days and you dont have to look far to see all of the similar deals that have gone south in other cities. The longer it takes the more councillors are walking away from it. Mandel is obsessive about ramming this through and it will probably cost him the next election. Katz should put up the rest of the money and feel lucky the city is screwing us over enough already to get to this point.

I'm so tired of the city's resources and time being wasted on this while so many other things need attention. Build it or kill it but move on already.

From the beginning, I've also been mad at the location. So much money has already been put into downtown revitalization projects that no one cares about or just use for a short time then drive back to the suburbs. Once this new arena happens the coliseum area is going to be a ghost town. Why take this away from that part of the city? Why not just build it in the empty area to the northeast of rexall? Downtown's seen enough investment.

I hope they build a bridge, straight out of a fairy tale with trolls and dragons between the proposed this and the proposed arts district. It would be out of the World Class.

Yup, but we are going to revitalize it by building a rink there. Same concept as downtown correct?

No. Downtown is a busy active centre that would hopefully continue into the evenings on gameday or other event nights. The current location is a cespool with no legitimate industry to help support it.

The Rexall area already is a ghost town except on game nights, and you'll have to refresh our memories on what big investments have gone on downtown lately. The majority of citizens have decided the best location for the rink is downtown, so it's going downtown. If they were to choose a different location for whatever reason it definitely wouldn't be near the current **** hole.

Then god forbid, KATZ would actually have to come up with real money. You know, like what happened in Ottawa.

There we have it.

Putting another building in that disgusting northeast area would serve no purpose except to make people flee to their homes after a game instead of staying in the area. Much as they do now. Nobody in their right mind would ever even travel to that area if Rexall didn't exist.

Eh? I thought that was the whole point, was to revitalize downtown, you are telling me it is already a busy active center. And you get one block north or one block east from 'downtown' and it's as big of a cespool as the north east.
