If we pick up Boychuk, does a forward have to be moved?

Sounds like this is a no-brainer.

If you're going to include a Hartikainen-Boychuk-Paajarvi line in your top 6, then you also need to account for the two wingers that average 6'2", 211lb that Boychuk would be playing with.

That's a 4th line, and both Hartikainen and Paajarvi are big wingers.

But like I said earlier, Boychuk hasn't played center in ages (though he's actually been a pretty good faceoff man in his limited time in the NHL)

Even though he's not a big guy, I'd still take him over Petrell. It woul be nice to have him on a line with Smyth and Horcoff for a bit.

If that is the case, then that brings him into the Gagner size range, which is better. But i still don't believe we need another player of that ilk.

We need a faceoff wizard aka Stoll/Brodziak, with some size and grit. I'm not sure who is available next year as FA's, but hopefully there are some bodies available that fit that role.

I think we'd all like to see Perry or Getzlaf here, but that just isn't going to happen ... Anaheim will throw stupid money at them to keep them together.

Meh. Guys like Stoll and Brodziak don't bring enough offense. Belanger fits that description and has historically been every bit as good as them offensively, and look at people's view on him (yes, I know he was bad last year, but Stoll was too)

To Edmonton:
Ryan Miller
Robyn Regehr
No thanks Miller has a too big of a cap hit and has not been the same goalie the last few years. I am happy with our team as it is.

With Loktionov asking for a trade, maybe the Oil can do something for him and Bernier?

The difference between Bernier and Dubnyk isn't large enough to justify the price it would cost to acquire Bernier.

I'm not even sure Bernier is better than Dubnyk at all.

Zach Boychuk

Assets: Is versatile enough to be used in any game situation, and at any forward position. Has scoring potential, grit and hockey sense. Sets a good example in terms of his work ethic.
Flaws: His lack of ideal size for the pro game may hinder his ability to produce points on a consistent basis at the NHL level, so he may have to settle for a defensive role.
Career Potential: Versatile forward with some upside.

Worth it for free? Yes

Frazer McLaren

Assets: Uses his massive frame to be an intimidating presence on the ice. Has the ability to play more minutes than the average enforcer, especially at lower levels.

Flaws: Is not talented enough to see top-six forward minutes as a power forward, so he must improve his defensive-zone coverage in order to become an NHL regular.

Career Potential: Enforcer with a little upside.

Worth it for free? Yes

(Both profiles courtesy of Sports Forecaster)

I guess what you're looking at here are two guys who are definitely worth it for free. At the end of the day, I probably don't claim Boychuk because of his size, but I do claim McLaren because he's basically Eager's replacement while he's hurt.

Not Cam Janssen. We have a part time enforcer in Hordichuk.
I do get the sense that Boychuk and McLaren both get claimed, Edmonton or not.

This! We have no need for Bernier.

I think if we're going after anyone right now, it's Boychuk, not Loktionov. The fact one's free and a lot more gritty makes a big difference

We need a backup goalie going forward. If we could get Bernier without giving too much in return, you have to take the deal.

But that won't be the case so it's a moot point. We need to go after a guy like Backstrom in free agency

Current asking price is at least a first rounder. If we need a backup goalie, it's going to be for less than that.

Where does Loktionov fit though?

I always see Kings fan posting that he can't play on the wing at all.

Isn't it not clear though that Minny is going to re-sign Backstrom because of Harding's battle with MS?

I said a goalie like Backstrom. If he tests free agency, we should be in on him, if not, consider other options. Maybe a guy like Theodore. Either way, its better than giving up our first round pick ++ for a backup goalie

Would love to get Boychuk, as he is probably my favourite all-time Lethbridge Hurricane. However, just don't see it happening. Hopefully someone picks him up and he can get a fresh start.

Evgeni Nabokov would be an interesting goalie to go after.

Dealing away our 1st for Bernier would be insanity at this stage.

We've done well with Russian goalies in the past.

Older goalie as a UFA signing...where have I seen this before...

Backstrom will be 35 this summer. Maybe the Khabby deal taught us something in regards to the term but as a UFA goalie who knows what he will be offered. But the Roloson, then Khabby deal never really worked out for us over the course of them.

Valeri Nicushkin is our guy we should be targeting in the draft, we may need to move up a little depending on where we finish.

A big winger who drives the net. I'm sold.

I'd watch Gauthier, Erne and Fucale as other targets

I wonder if in a later round, we pick up Steve's son Adam Tambellini
