Wayne Gretzky interested in becoming Leafs President?
So I'm listening to the Fan 590 last hour and Kypreos said that the MLSE have had internal preliminary talks about Gretzy becoming the President of the club. He also said Gretzky would be very interested.
Thoughts?
I'd think he'd give a good boost to the team and give it some much needed credibility back.
Well he'd definitely have some say in decisions. But it's not a 24/7 job, more of a figurehead. Would bring a ton of credibility back to the franchise.
Sounds like MLSE is out looking for some cheap and meaningless prestige with a hire like this. Unless Gretzky could go to bat for the Leafs when we're hunting UFAs, it seems less than useful.
Burke talked about it being a mostly ceremonial position for him, at least in Toronto. Most of the traditional responsibilities of a team president are handled by MLSE.
Toronto media just spent the last 2 weeks telling us how it was bad for the team that a member of management was the face of the franchise and not a player. Now they're advocating hiring the greatest (former) hockey player ever to run the show.

Yea but if you had any face you might as well get one who can be controlled.
Burke has so much pride. Gretzky hasnt really proven anything in the front office has he? so your bringing in someone that everyone knows. but someone who won't put there image first, before the team.
And besides as others have said, what does the president do exactly?
