Seems pretty obvious that it took time to sign because the player/agent was playing a game of chicken with the GM. Unlike PK Subban that's why I felt safe drafting Benn in my pools, seemed like the general principle of the deal was always in place but we were just waiting for one of them to blink.
Considering Lupul just got 5M. Talk about a steal.
Lupul was an impending UFAgent, so he had considerably more leverage. I'm sure if Benn was in the same situation, his deal would have been considerably higher. A better comparable for Lupul would be what Getzlaf and Perry end up getting, which should be alot higher than the Lupul deal.
A better comparable for Benn would be the deal Paccioretty got, which is about 4.5/year longterm. Similar players, but Benn is better and compensated as such.
