He stood out for me too when we played them. I thought he was their best d at least in our games

Wouldn't take Ovechkin for free at this point. Possibly the worst contract in the NHL and is a huge distraction.

Do people not realize how bad Oveckin's contract is? He's signed for 8 more seasons at a cap hit of $9.5 million. That is a team crippling contract, especially if he continues to slide into mediocrity. I'm not even sure I'd take him and his contract for free at this point.

Well he is a proven 30 goal scorer, younger than Michalek and rumored to be trade bait. Kessel has as many as points as Michalek in three less years, what makes him better than Kessel? Why not upgrade the top line if the opportunity is available?

If Washington blows up their team, swoop in and pluck up Backstrom. I'm sure we could find room for Turris on the wing. To me, when Backstrom is on his game, he's a top 10 player in the NHL. I really don't know what their needs are.

Backstrom seems like a completely different player since that concussion. (And Ovi beibg awful).

What is his contract like?

Backstrom would be nice to have on this team but I doubt that Washington would part with him, and we don't have the disposable assets to get him.

Backstrom and Alzner, in my eyes, would be Washington's only untouchables if they decided to blow it up. We wouldn't be happy with what it would take to get Backstrom. Too much.

If they get a lottery pick and Mckinnon maybe they will trade Backstrom.

The perfect guy to replace Alfie when he retires. He will fit in perfectly with this club.

Karlsson, Silfver, Zibby, Lehner, Alfie, Cleasson, Vikstrand etc

Kessel is the most pointless $5.4M player in the NHL when he isn't producing. Michalek makes $1.2M less and plays both ends of the rink.

I wouldn't trade Michalek even up for Kessel, unless I had a follow up trade that would move Kessel for Perry, or any player of that ilk.

FYI the trade rumours you refer to are mostly driven by the fact that he is a UFA next year and growing fears Kessel may not wish to stay in TO.

Another factor spawning the rumours, Kessel is a one dimensional player that just doesn't fit well into Carlyle's system.

BTW Kessel wouldn't fit with MacLean's system either.

Backstrom is part of the problem in Washington, he's their #1 center with 1 goal and 7 assists. Robeiro is out playing and producing him.

He also has 7 more years on his contract with a $6.7M cap hit and the final 4 years pay him $7M, $7.5M, $7.5M and $8M. Not a contract that would be easy to move if his game didn't have a significant turnaround.

If I was Murray and willing to spend Backstrom money, Ryan or Perry would be on the list, not Backstrom.

So being Swedish is the criteria for being a perfect with the Sens. :laugh

If you think Backstrom would make a great RWer, then you may be right.

8 points in 11 games ain't too shabby, especially considering his best winger is Troy Brouwer. Hasn't seen too much time with Ovie. If you think McPhee would have trouble moving that contract, I respectfully disagree. I think 29 teams would take it from them without blinking.

Honestly I'd be looking to add someone with size and skill the top 6: our centers (Spezza and Turris) aren't very physical; not pushovers but I think we need to make sure our top 6 has size and skill. Not sure Murray would be willing to entertain getting Backstrom because Washington is going to be looking for a lot.

From a business standpoint, Ovy would make the company a fair bit of money in increased ticket sales and memorabilia sales.

They would also be shelling out a ton of money for an underperforming player

I doubt it, not with at least 10 teams needing to shed cap for next season.

Backstrom just isn't playing to his contract, and while I do agree some GM would be willing to take the gamble, IMO not many would at the price McPhee would be asking.

I have watched the Caps 3 or 4 times this season, Backstrom just isn't the same player he was 2-3 years ago.

Added: I don't use stats as the sole measure of a players effectiveness, 1 goal and 7 assists aren't bad as you pointed out. However what needs to be factored in is he has played 155 ES minutes (5 pts) and 47 PP minutes (3 pts) as the team's first line center.

The team may be lost, but players like Backstrom have to lead the way, not just be one of crowd.
