rosters have to be set for the playoffs come this thursday for the ahl(must be on the active 23 man roster or injured reserve)...so the time is right on the ads if they plan on making any further moves..
a few announced admiral roster moves so far today for the clear day roster...kotyk recalled and robinson sent back to rockford(of course)...still leaves an open roster spot that will no doubt be filled today for the clear day(last month and playoff eligible) roster that had to be in by this afternoon..i fully expect reid simpson to be called up for that last spot...something i didn't know and don't understand is why the regular season roster was expanded to 23 players this ahl season...but the clear day roster is only for 22 players(according to ahl.com)....
todays kotyk-robinson swap puts the ads like this..
21 players on active roster;
2 players on injured reserve(technically eligible for the playoffs,but don't count against the regular active roster limit of 23, or the clear day limit of 22);
so...basically one spot remains open...my guess is it's gonna be simpson after seeing noel's comments on his signing and how he could be useful in MIL...would leave segal off the roster as it currently stands(unless brown and segal were swapped today),and would force the ads to go into the playoffs with only 6 dmen...this reduction might well be the explanation of why segal was sent down the other day(even though i would have figured brown would be the odd man out before segal)
would also expect yarema to be signed to a regular contract after his pto is up
but....remember the rule is that only the clear day roster is eligible, EXCEPT if one of them is on injured reserve,where a replacement can be named...so if burke henry gets back-ads carry 7 dmen into the playoffs...if he doesn't admirals can add brown or segal...same is true for haydar,if something happened and he wasn't off injured reserve until say after the playoffs started
evidently Burke Henry is near being activated,which would give the ads 7 active defensemen once again...would expect that when this happens there would be no one sent down(despite the clear day roster not including paul brown),because the Admirals still have one guy on the clear day roster,haydar,on injured reserve..and can therefore avoid having to send brown down unitl he's activated
Admirals with another small move today...signed Tyler Hanchuck to a 10 day pto contract, to be the 7th defenseman to cover until Henry returns no doubt(or if he doesn't i suppose)...puts Admirals at the new 22 man clear day roster limit(with Henry and Haydar on the injured reserve)....Brown for Haydar and now Hanchuck for Henry covering the injured reserve slots
Hanchuck is a 23 year old,6-3 210 former 2000 3rd round pick of Montreal(he was 79th overall)...played 30 games with Albany in the AHL last year and was then hurt...played 60 games in the CHL with Topeka this year...was actually invited to the Admirals preseason camp,supposed to be a strong stay at home type of tough guy...
segal recalled today,and so far no one listed as being sent down...means one of two things...
1)either hanchuck's is being sent away(which is probable anyway of course,since he hasn't played in any of the 3 games since his signing)..and segal is being called up to take Henry's spot on the clearday roster(which is not very likely considering henry is rumored to be back this week and the ads no doubt want to keep 7 dmen for the playoffs)
or much more likely;
2)the last game yarema(foot),brown(upper body),and smithson(knee) all left the game with injuries and never returned...and one or more of them is headed to the injured list and segal is that guy's replacement..
could not understand when Tootoo was activated for the last game why the Admirals didn't have to make a roster move...thought it meant the Admirals would have to send either Segal or Brown away since Tootoo's activation put them at 23 active players,one more than after the clear day roster limit of 22. But it starts to clear up today. Wyatt Smith has an 'upper body injury' which is rumored to be cracked ribs and has gone on the injured reserve,allowing Brown to be on the roster in his place,and Segal on the roster in Haydar's place. Supposedly both will return in time for the playoffs. Another rumor is that Hutchinson is having back problems and that was why he didn't play against Edmonton, and is doubtful tomorrow. Hanchuck will be released as soon as Hutchinson is ready to go i'm sure.
