Origin of the term "check"

Hi all,

Sorry if this isn't the place for this thread but I'm watching the Sharks/Avs game with a friend of mine who is new to hockey and he asked where the origin of the term check came from. I was able to distinguish the various forms of "checks" (IE not just body contact but really any attempt to separate a man from the puck) but I had no idea where the term may have come from. I did a google search with no success. Does anyone have any idea? I figured this was sort of a history question over a general discussion question but please feel free to move if I was wrong in that assumption.

Thanks

As far as I know, the definition of check (to stop, slow, curb, or control something) has been around much longer than the game of hockey. So, I wouldn't consider it hockey specific or of hockey origin. Even the term body check is just a logical extension in terminology (using the body to check, implying contact).
