Only way you trade away Kessel is if you get a quality return. By that I mean a high first round pick in which we can build around for the future and more. These offers such as Wilson + 1st + 2nd won't help us.

Kessel is a fantastic support player. Only way I trade him is if there's a deal on the table you cant resist.

Stewart + Schwartz from the blues.

Stewart is a tough player who can score as well (something we need) + Schwartz is a quality prospect.

That's great. We need a top center prospect badly.

But then again no point trading Kessel unless someone overpays for him.

As in a top prospect + 1st + 2nd or something.

Zach Boychuk got placed on waivers by Carolina.... would be a decent pickup IMO.

Toronto Rebuild:

Thee trades to do a rebuild. I know this obviously won't happen for many reasons, including Toronto not wanting to do a full rebuild. But just for fun these are three trades I'd like to see:

The idea for this trade has probably been thought of before. Ryan O'Reilly being a great young center, a first in the deep draft coming up and a defensive defensemen prospect.

To AVS: Kessel

To TOR: Ryan O'Reilly, 1st 2013, Duncan Siemens

-------

Phaneuf being from Edmonton and Edmonton needing some help on the blueline, I see two possible trades. If Leafs take on Horcoff's salary, plus retain salary from Phaneuf's contract they might be able to get Schultz out of Edmonton and a 1st. If that's not realistic, then a simpler deal where they take on the full salary of Phaneuf, but Leafs take back Horcoff, Edmonton gives up Klefboom.

To EDM: Phaneuf (3.5M Salary)

To TOR: J. Schultz, 2013 1st, Horcoff

OR (If Edmonton refuses to trade Schultz because they just signed him)

To EDM: Phaneuf

To TOR: Klefboom, Horcoff

--------

My thinking here is if the Leafs want to do a rebuild then Luongo isn't the guy, Bernier is an option, but why not go after a highly touted prospect for the goalie position. Florida isn't going to trade Markstrom and Washington won't trade Holtby but if we offer a decent package for Malcolm, Boston might be interested. They have Raask. I don't know what their needs are too well, but their offensive group is stacked and Lupul or JVR would (a) be an over payment and (b) might be too high of a cap hit to work something around. With that being said Jesse Blacker is an entry level contract for them and to make up the difference, a 2nd in 2013 which is a deep draft. It could be a very high second.

To BOS: Jesse Blacker, 2nd 2013

To TOR: Malcolm Subban

-------

Without Phaneuf and Kessel in the line up and Lupul injured for a large part of the shortened season, Leafs tank and get a top 3 pick. In a couple years from now:

Lupul Mackinnon/Drouin JVR
Kadri O'Reilly Kulemin

Gardiner Schultz
Siemens Rielly

Malcolm/Reimer

Leafs have plenty of prospects to fill up the bottom six and the last pairing defensemen. Along the way a couple trades to get rid of Grabovski, Liles and other veterans once they are no longer needed. Trade them for draft picks and prospects to keep the cupboards stocked.

Are any of these trades realistic value wise?

Do we have room on our roster? Otherwise I'd be okay with picking him up.

Okay enough with the Kessel trade talk, how about some real discussion, how the hell do we get rid of Liles? I have not liked anything he has done this year. I'd rather see Komisarek out there over him.

i cant believe the undervaluing of Kessel on here... Yes he hasn't scored but he is still a PPG player.

Kess was 6th in scoring last year people!!! We finally have an elite scorer and now we want to dish him off for 2nd liners and B prospects

If he comes out and says he wont resign by all means move him... But till then he is untouchable imo!

Only the Phaneuf one.

Kessel really isn't worth much more than RoR IMO. RoR is an absolute stud defensively, and already led his team in points at age 20/21. Put up 5 points less than Kessel put up as a 20 year old while he was playing with Savard. Development isn't necessarily linear (aka you can't expect RoR to put up PPG numbers just cause he had a similar season as a 20 year old to Kessel offensively), but given his superb defensive game, the difference in value is definitely not a 1st+Siemens.

I also think Schults + 1st >> Klefbom, so it's weird that they get interchanged in the two Phaneuf deals. They would only consider the second of the two IMO.

As for M. Subban? Blacker has very limited value, he hasn't even played particularly well for the Marlies this year, his upside is considered to be that of a depth D. Certainly not enough to nab a top goalie prospect.

Would be a great pickup. Leading his AHL team in points.

I too would like to see this actually. I'd support giving him a shot over Steckel on our 4th line, that's for sure. Very very low risk and incredibly high reward IMO.

I still think the Leafs need a big winger who can skate to lineup alongside Phil Kessel on the first line.

Kessel carries that line and we need to make it a legit first line, one that can line up against the opposing teams top lines.

Would a Bobby Ryan fit that mold?

Ryan - Bozak - Kessel is not a bad line at all.

Another player the Leafs can target is Paul Stasny. He's come out of the gate struggling with Colorado with only one assist in 5 games. A change of scenery might work out for him.

We might not have to give up a first.

I'd be inclined to include Jake Gardiner in a deal for Bobby Ryan.

JVR or Lupul?

Upgrading on the wing is probably our lowest priority right now. The other positions are more important + we have less depth at them anyways. The assets needed to trade for a guy like B. Ryan would be better spent towards a C or G.

There are so many guys that could move on this team IMO, and be replaced by guys within the system - not to the same degree right away, but I dont expect this team to get better before it gets worse. Thats just my 2 cents.

List of guys to move ASAP: MacArthur, Liles, Franson
List of guys to move, if right deal comes + realistic replacement in sights: Bozak, Grabovski, Frattin

I'd like to see us acquire some picks and use the strength of this draft to plug two major holes (shutdown D w/ mobility, and #1C). Im still letting Reimer see if he has it in him to be #1G.

Lupul - xxx - Kessel
JVR - Kadri - Kulemin
Biggs - Colborne - Ashton
Komarov - McClement - Hamilton

Rielly - Phaneuf
Gardiner - xxx
Gunnarsson - Percy / Finn / Blacker / You name it

Reimer

Thats my 2C. Lineup has the size, speed, and skill to easily play a carlyle game. And I view Colborne and Kadri as interchangeable, but thats because I am admittedly quite high on Colborne.

Finn and percy are both shutdown d, who can also carry the puck, IMO,we are set on D

Its kinda true, but I dont see either with enough speed to play a top end shutdown role.

And Finn is most certainly not a shutdown D, i live in guelph. true two way defenseman, good defense but i dont know if its good enough to be a top end shutdown guy. percy has a better shutdown game but his mobility is limited.

Some discussion in the Trades sub forum about Phaneuf for Statsny, straight up.

I'm not in the pro-trade Kessel camp at all.

Phaneuf has much more value than Stastny. Please. Stop.

Duchene or RoR + then yea, I'd trade Phaneuf.
