I see nothing in Ashton to date that projects beyond Frattin. Frattin is going to be top six as I've said for two years and it's happening as we speak. Ashton has promise but how anyone can say his game is superior escapes me. I like Ashton but he's a project, Frattin is a bonafide NHLer.

This. We are a big #1 centre, #1 goalie (Maybe Reimer) and a top line defensemen who can eat up minutes so Phaneuf can keep his TOI to around 22:00. Then we are a contender.

Filling those holes won't be easy.

I agree 100%, I think Frattin is a keeper.

Also really like what I've seen of the Grabo line with JVR on it. Also think Kulemin looks quicker this year than last.

Kuli was tenacious last night. I really think when the dust settles, Kadri and Frattin graduate to second line, PP duty, and Kuli slots in as the perfect third line forward. Kuli and Komarov look like a fit down the road as a shutdown line.

We need some luck, it's possible all of these holes are filled internally. Gardiner/Rielly could be a #1D, Kadri could be a #1C, and Reims could be a #1G. All of these guys need time before we can know for sure. But, like I said with luck it's possible.

And Weiss doesn't change ANY of that, which was the point we were arguing. Nowhere near the player we need to change any of that. He's not a number one center, he's not a goaltender and he's sure as hell not a defenseman.

So again, why waste assets on Weiss? No reason at all.

No thanks to Weiss... He's been brutal this season and is only a #2 C anyways

I agree. I saw enough of Ashton last season in the NHL to know immediately that Tampa Bay made out real good. Nothing the kid did, in 15 games, left me with any sort of impression that he would be an NHL player. Literally nothing.

I agree with you, but Kadri I envision as a #2C. I still think we need a dominant #1C who can free up space for Kessel. Getzlaf would be ideal but it's a pipe dream as of now.

Rielly will be that #1D man as soon as next year.

Sign Getzlaf as our #1C in the summer! Try to add Perry as a package deal.

Backstrom as our #1G and let Reimer grow into a #1 ala Schnieder in Van and Hiller in Ana.

So much wrong with all of this...

Rielly MIGHT become a #1 D for us down the line. Did Gudbranson, Schenn, Bogosian, Barker, Hickey, Alzner, etc etc become #1 Dmen 1 year after being drafted? Those are all former top 5 picks. At this point in time, none of them are #1 dmen.

Sign Getzlaf? Sure, if he wants to come here. IF he reaches free agency, which theres a good chance he wont (his wife is from OC, he really likes it there, if he doesnt want to sign there then another team might trade for him and then sign him, etc), so IF he reaches free agency, we're still competing against 20+ other teams for him, including multiple SC Contenders.

I want to bring in Backstrom, but doing so doesn't mean that Reimer WILL grow into a #1. Schneider was a great goalie prospect brought up in the Vancouver system, Reimer was a so-so goalie prospect.

Kadri as a #1C means we have to have a big physical #2C ala Gretzky/Messier

Teams will be too good shutting us down with 2 smaller skilled Centers..

Thats why Barkov or Monahan is perfect for us this draft there 2 way big physical Centers and its essential we draft one of them

I like the Stewart trade, he would definitely be another big goal scoring winger that we need, and I think he could fit well with Kadri. Elliot would also give us decent goalie that could back up Reimer and maybe give us more stability.

I'd pass on the Stastny and the Kuli trade though. Although I would like Stastny and feel he would provide a solid upgrade, I don't see Colorado doing that one, and I dont want Kuli shipped out, we need that type of forward more then we need the 1st we'd get back.

Solid proposals though.

Yeah I'd be interested in him. I think he can be a good NHL player. If the cost is low, I'd inquire. We need to stockpile some forward prospects with potential. I'd really like to pick Boychuk up off waivers too.

Is now the time that leafs make a huge splash?

Anyone else think that leafs will make a huge splash during trade deadline or during off-season with ufa signings or trading up to get mackinnon or jones? Especially with the 2 other major teams making big splashes? The Blue Jays made a huge trade during the off-season, today the Raptors traded for Rudy Gay.

If what the Jays or Raptors do has any affect on how the Leafs operate the team, the GM or whoever is putting that idea out there should be canned immediately.
