He's not overpaid. He'll bring depth on offense and another big body down low.

It's hardly a panic move. They need to improve their bottom-six one way or another, but from what I can tell, speed is more of an issue than size. Not sure this is going to do them much good.

I think the salary is in market-range value. Seems fine.

More money than I thought he would get, but New York definitely could use him so I can't call it a bad deal. Maybe the extra time off will benefit him, and it'll help shore up their weakness at C.

Love it when people on hf call trades or signings. Just like the Olesz for Campbell trade a few years back.

Panic? Signing Jason Arnott to a 1 year deal is panicking? In what universe?

This adds depth to the forward lineup. He's not going to be playing big minutes. This was a much needed move.

They had a huge need for a more offensive centre on the 3rd line. Boyle is made to be on the 4th.

This is not an over payment... It's a one year deal in a 70m cap. If it we're a 2 or 3 year deal yes you can argue an over payment. But its fine.

This kind of thing makes me wonder about GM-coach communication. Arnott threw a fit in St. Louis because Hitchcock required him to put effort into practice, and then Arnott pouted and stopped working on the ice. Tortorella is a no-nonsense guy who weeds laziness out of his lineup and won't tolerate an attitude like that, even from a slow veteran. In a short season, Arnott's tank might stay full enough that this doesn't become an issue, but it seems like an odd match.

arnott signing relegates halpern to the press box and gives more offense... not to mention kreider is scratched tonight again for an injured ankle he suffered earlier this month in a game with the whale against the adirondack phantoms in glens falls. (was at the game.. took a slapper off his foot). i see it as an insurance policy and a plus keeping an offensively gifted player away from the flyers.

He isn't the best locker room guy but I think the Rangers have enough leadership to minimize his pouting (which he does quite a bit).

Offensively he can't be worse than Boyle or any slower

Best scenario would be to relegate Boyle to the 4th line, Rupp to AHL and have Halpern as the 3rd line center

Considering salary cap is at $70M and he had 17 goals last year. In this shortened season he will be good enough to help. Rangers are all in to win it this year. Arnott I believe has to help in that department

Well he is update over Halpern who has been pretty bad.

Arnott will also help the powerplay by bringing in another right handed shot.

Is the contract pro-rated? I mean, if its $1.7 million they really are only giving him about 1 million correct?

Gives them good depth that was lost in the Nash trade.

Rangers needed a bottom-six body. And someone who could perhaps force Boyle back to where he belongs, on the fourth line.

I think the NYR overpaid for a player well passed his prime and slow. Arnott is not much of an offensive threat either anymore. At this point you get size and experience

He's better offensively than Boyle for sure. However, he doesn't have the defensive game Boyle has, so Arnott'll likely see PP time and Boyle continue to PK. I don't agree on Halpern though. He's been decent in New York so far but he's not cut out for third line duty anymore.

I'd imagine so.

I've always liked Arnott and I like the Rangers so it's nice to see him land there and find a new home. Agree with everyone really. Arnott's real slow but I've thought all last offseason he could still be useful. 17 goals, albeit on a really good Blues team, as a third line center isn't shabby at all. Again though, his defensive game and speed are nil. However, as most everyone said, he won't be counted on for those things by the Rangers. Adds depth, a veteran, a leader, and a Cup winner and some extra offense and options for the PP. He's a big body too but doesn't use it much. He'll be used on the third line so Boyle goes back down to the fourth where he is clearly the best fit.

I thought the price was a tad high at first, but thinking about it more it's only for a year and it's pretty fair. Obviously pro-rated but Arnott still did well for himself and got a chunk of cash in a shortened year. Good signing by New York. I like it very much and can't wait to see him debut.
