Kessel is very underrated around here, his reputation is at an all-time low because of the team he plays for, but he would seriously do big dammage on a solid team.

I think Kessel's reputation is at an all time high.

There is a big difference between thinking someone is not a good player and thinking someone is not a player that a team should build around.

An awful lot of people think Kessel could be the final piece of the puzzle that puts a team over the top to win a Cup. Few people think Kessel would be able to be the main guy on a championship team.

Even if Kessel were not a ufa in 2014, I think the NYI would pass.

You'll have to ask Leaf fans.

For Tavares?
Nah. The NYI are building around Tavares, looking for him to be the face of the franchise as they move into Brooklyn.

For Kessel. I don't think the Islanders would be stupid enough to trade Tavares.

Leafs fans are not overvaluing Kessel here it's the Leaf haters that are seriously undervaluing Kessel.

Kessel is coming off a 30+ goal and 80+ point season and he is just entering his prime. You will pay a premium to get Kessel. It will cost you a GOOD young player playing in your top 6, likely your best prospect and your 1st round pick. Start with this and a Kessel to team X is a little more realistic.

The Leafs are not taking back salary dumps or bottom 6 players or 2nd tier prospects or mid rd picks as valuable pieces.

I think they would pass as well although if the Leafs were to go in the crapper this season and that pick ended up being a top 3, I think it gets a little more interesting.

Kessel, Mackinnon/Jones/Drouin, and Gardiner is quite a price for someone like Tavares.

What about Colin Wilson + 1st round pick + Jon Blum for Phil Kessel?

That's the Preds best young offensive guy in Wilson, likely a decent first round pick in a stacked draft and Blum who can plug in to an NHL second pairing and play now.

Kessel (assumes signed extension)
2013 2nd

for

Brock Nelson
Anders Nillson
Josh Bailey
Calvin DeHaan

Sets us up next year with

MM / JT / Okposo
Nino / Strome / Kessel

We keep our first rounder in this draft to select the BPA and should be set on our 1st two lines for a long time to come.

Thats probably why nobody will trade for him unless its an underpayment.

NYI is logical...

Kessel for Strome Nino 1st 2013

or

Minnisota because Kessel might get them the cup there close

Kessel for Coyle, Dumba 1st

Like Minny idea

M. Richards + Bernier

Leafs probably have to add in this. But gives LA a go to sniper, gives Toronto a two-way physical skilled centre + a goalie with upside they can gamble on.

Its a good package no doubt.

But I think the Leafs would prefer to trade for 1-2 pieces with a higher ceiling, as opposed to three pieces that all likely will be good NHLers, but not top line guys.

Colin Wilson will be a top line guy IMO, I really rate him.

Kessel is a good player, but then again. Why trade him? Whats the point in trading him?
Theres 2 logic scenarios :

1- You trade him for someone similar (ex. Ryan) or for another position (ex. Dman/Goalie/Center).

2- You trade him for prospects, picks and do a proper rebuild. But then you have risks (ex. Kessel for 1st pick, Good prospect, another nhler winger (for the cap dump)).

I dont think Toronto have a bad base. They are just missing key players : Goalie. Another one good Dman. One elite center. And another good winger.

They can fill 1-2 by trades/ufas. The other, will probably be by drafting though...

Too soft, not a winner, upcoming UFA. Personally I wouldn't offer near what Leafs fans would want for Kessel.

Kessel is a ufa in 2014.

Do you expect the isles to win the SC before he becomes a ufa in 2014?

I'm asking because Snow always stresses the need, for trades to make sense for both the short term and longterm.

Winning the SC with Kessel, would certainly be worth losing 19 yr old Strome, 20 yr old Nino and a 1st rounder. I just want an idea, of whether the NYI would win the SC in 2013 or 2014?

Why is tge OP trading Kessel looking for a centre? Isnt the seaech for a centreto have someone for Kessel?

Besides, why trade a sure thing 30+goal per season player unless you decide to rebuild?

His value should be quite high. There arent enough guys out there that have scored like that (especially with a lesser supporting cast). Hbad Burkes gamble ended up with 2 mid 1sts and mid 2nd hed be a genius again, instead you have a potential franchise centre and perrenial all-star dman for him.
