I don't think Gagner is a bad player and may be better with a change of scenery but if he's not capable of being a 2nd line center for the lowly (for the time being) Edmonton Oilers then it doesn't speak well.
Best comparison I could think of off the top of my head is when the Leafs traded a 2nd to the Habs for the talented but underwhelming Mikhail Grabovski. Gagner has a little more on his resume than when Grabovski got traded though.
How about a bag of pucks + a Bobby Hull jock strap??
Seriously, he's not someone that would return much value, given how stagnant his development has been over the years. It's better that the Oil keeps him, and see how he turns out, rather than trading him for next to nothing.
If you want an actual proposal, I would probably give Boyd Gordon for him, that's about it.
As the title suggests, I am curious as to what fans of other teams would actually offer for Sam Gagner?
The oilers should hold onto him. People forget he is only 23 years old because of his 5 seasons. When he's playing with yakupov and another skilled winger he will put up points. As seen by his 4 in 4 so far. Small sample, but still.
On hfboards, a player only has value if they're excellent at playing a particular roll (e.g. Hanzal in Phoenix) or if they're a player that is generally viewed as a star (e.g. Eberle).
Anyone who doesnt fit into that is essentially viewed as valueless because people cant fit the square pegs into the arbitrary round holes in their mind. For example, Gagner is a small, offensively skilled #2C. Most people expect a #2C to be a big, shutdown player with a limited ability to score. So Gagner doesnt fit into the sterotype of a #2C, and therefore people assume he's useless.
From what Ive seen this year, he has visibly improved on his weaknesses and stands a good chance of stepping up his game to the next level.
Not being traded, and certainly not for the values people will state in this thread.
He would be worth a lot more if he could win faceoffs. He's winning only 40% so far this season after 47% last season and 43% in 2010/11, and 47% in 2009/10. He's got offensive skills, but he's not physical, not good on faceoffs, average at best on defense, and not good at battling for the puck.
Beyond his first season, I have never seen what the hype about him has been. It's as if EDM fans are mentally playing GM and trying to get someone to take him off their hands? I'd offer a 2nd or 3rd max.
For offering him in seemingly every proposal, it amazes me that Edmonton fans hate the "not offensive enough for 2nd line, not defensive enough for 3rd line" evaluation. He definitely gets underrated around here, but there is a reason he is deemed expendable to the Oilers.

Because he's not 6'4... That's literally the only reason
Not specifically from my team but I think Gagner is worth a 2nd round pick currently, at the deadline maybe a 2nd and a prospect. I think his value would be similar to Stempniak in Calgary
People just don't want all offense type of guys unless they are putting up 60-70 points or more. People view it as a liability and having a good defensive player who scores 35 points is better than having an offensive player who scores 40 points.
He just doesn't fit into the design of many teams.
Maybe having Gagner as the 2nd line center is part of the reason the Oilers have been so bad for the past few years. It certainly didn't do them any good.
