This is an absolutely great post. Advanced stats don't translate as well as they do in baseball and I'll fully admit to not using them like I do when discussing baseball.

My entire contention is that plus minus is a garbage stat. Just like RBI's in baseball.

I seriously don't even like Bolland that much, his detractors frothing at the mouth and claiming that he's a total liability on the second line is just so wrong that I can't help but get into the argument.

And that team that "struggled" to score was SECOND IN THE LEAGUE IN GPG!!!!
I should have clarified, forwards having trouble scoring. Lid and Rafalski were big time producers on that team.

Bolland HAS underperformed more than anyone on this team. Are you also suggesting he was hurt while still in the lineup? Never heard it.

The dude's always hurt, but outside of that, why don't we go with the whopping 16 game sample size?

I'm not even arguing that that second line hasn't been good. Sharp, despite his point totals, has been bad. I've said it before and I'll say it again - based solely on their play this season, Sharp and Saad's point totals should be reversed.

But blaming Sharp for Bolland's poor point production or vice versa would be wrong. I have no problem with somebody saying that Bolland doesn't work on "this" second line. But he has put up more points in a lesser role with lesser linemates over a much larger sample size.

My issue is with people saying Bolland is a poor excuse of a second line player and never has/could be one.

So Bolland being in the top 6 means he can't be used in a shutdown role? Someone should tell Q that because so far this year Bolland's line has consistently been on the ice against the other teams top players.

really guys, why should we trade Bolland? Why not give up on some of our prospects for additional help to what we already have?

Bolland is needed for the playoffs. He's got 14 goals/23 assists in 49 career playoff games, not bad for a bottom 6 center, not to mention he's pretty much the lone antagonist the Blackhawks have.

Well, Shaw and Carcillo fill the antagonist role pretty well too. But, I agree that Bolland has proven to be a playoff performer and a solid argument can be made that his play against D.Sedin and Jumbo in the 2nd/3rd rounds in 09/10 were just as valuable as any other Hawk player in their run to the Cup.

I guess it is a time to extend Stalberg (approx. 2,5 mil.?) and Bickell (below 2 mil.?) – for 2-3 years to not loose them for nothing. It will allow hawks to trade 1 of them or both after next season based on the winger prospects progression (Smith, Hayes, Morin, TT).
I guess Olesz will be bought out for sure this summer and I would suggest to trade away Bolland (injury prone) and Frolik (hands of stone), as they will have 1 year remaining on their deals and hawks will need cap space to re-sign Kruger and Leddy. As a return a young center would be great (Drew Shore, Lars Eller etc.) + young big Dman (Brenden Dillon, Jake Muzzin, Tomas Kundratek etc.). We can use the prospects or picks to sweeten the deal, if necessary…
Montador’s situation is a bit unclear now, he is a buy out candidate, but if he will return soon and show he can play, I can see some small market team take a flyer on him for a low pick or as the throw in for Bolland / Frolik trade, as he will have 2 years remaining on his contract for just 2,3 and 1,8 mil.
2013/14 lineup:
Saad – Toews – Hossa
Sharp – Shaw – Kane
Bickell – Kruger – Stalberg
Carcillo – young C via trade – Smith
Bollig / Hayes / Morin / Pirri
Keith – Seabrook
Hjalmarsson – Oduya
Leddy – young D via trade
Brookbank / Clendening / Johns
Crawford (Karlsson)

You can keep Stalberg and bickell if you trade Frolik and dump Olesz and Monty. They'll dump Olesz but I don't know if they'll do that with montador

with Stalberg it's not about wanting to keep him. It's about what he wants and thinks he is worth. If he wants 3+ million, he is going to test the market and a team will pay up for him.

Stalberg will want and get, from Hawks, what the current cap hit is for Filppula 3M.

Hawks C depth is even more brutal in that lineup then it currently is

Shaw is not solution to #2 C spot

- Also Frolik has 1 yr left on his contract after this season

Also I want a proven backup not a guy who has shown very little at NHL level and is nearly 30 yrs old

I think we'll be in the market for a backup this summer.

Emery can get a raise and a 1B (maybe even a starter?) offer, and I can't see him passing that up.

His goal since surgery has been returning to the NHL as a starter. With Crawford playing the way he is, Emery's not going to get that chance here.

There will be some affordable vet g's on market

Theodore should be healthy by start of next season for instance and could be cheap vet #2 for Hawks next year

Any possibility of Stalberg signing a more expensive, 2 year deal?

Pay him $3.75 for 2 years and have his contract expire when Toews and Kane need raises.

Montador and most likely Olesz will be bought out so we'll have the cap

It really depends on what Kruger and Leddy get

I'm also not convinced they buy out Montador. I think he'll be a 3rd pairing guy or rotate with Brookbank next year. I think they'll have about $3 mil to sign 2 wingers (replacing Bickell and Stalberg) and a back up goalie.

I was going to post that myself. Hopes of packaging prospect trash+ for Weiss are gone now. Would have been fine to see Olsen and Beach+ go for a good rental.

At least we have a better idea about why his season was going so badly.

Olsen and Beach for a solid roster player from Florida still works for me.
