Not sure if I agree with Drouin being the better junior player, even if he produced better.
The thing about Drouin is that what he does in the Q, will likely not work in the NHL imo. Holdning the puck for that long, the plays he makes are plays that would never happen in the NHL, or highly unlikely. There is no question about his talent, but I'm worried about his translation to the NHL. He might need to make some small changes to his game. Drouin seem at times to keep the puck on his stick for too long, a bit selfish at times?
I'm all for MacKinnon, if we dont select him if he is available I will be really disappointed. That will likely change after a short while, but I really do think MacKinnon is the kind of player and talent that will take this franchise to the next level. And MacKinnons speed is simply amazing..
Drouin will likely have to go the same route as Huberdeau. Going back to the Q for another year to gain some strength. The skill level and all is there, but need to add weight and strength.
some of what you described is actually what impressed me about drouin. he has that "patience" in front of the net that true goal scorers have. he reminds me of a patrick kane/jeff skinner clone with his hands, skating, vision and patience.
now, i haven't seen much of him live, so you may still be right in other situations (IE, neutral zone, entry, etc) - but in goal scoring areas, that patience is gold.
mackinnon's highlights looked more like a north-south player. he was very, very fast, but i thought his hands/vision were not what drouin's were. and there's no guarantee his game translates either. what happens when he's facing players who are better skaters than those he's facing in the Q? they're both listed at 5'11 and about 175 lbs...so neither has the edge there really. they're both small.
now, i'm going off strictly highlights. i haven't had the chance to see these two in live action, aside from the WJC, but Drouin was far more impressive there, too.
from what i've seen personally, i like Drouin more than Mackinnon. the fact that Drouin had 105 pts to Mackinnon's 75 is just is just added marginal data to lead me to picking Drouin.
we'll see, but mark me down as wanting Drouin. i've never been shy from straying from the consensus around these parts anyway
